Danièle Thompson, writer of such films as Cousin, Cousine, La Boum and Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train, makes her belated directorial debut with this dysfunctional family holiday drama. Movies about families splitting apart and coming together, enduring traumas and keeping secrets, are de rigeur this time of year, and it’s true you’ve seen this all before, if in a slightly different form. But though she indulges a misplaced tendency to let her actors monologize the camera, she draws rich performances from Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sabine Azéma, and studs the film with plot twists that hold your interest even if they don’t surprise you.
