Penang

Penang, an island off the west coast of peninsular Malaysia, is famous for its Nonya cuisine, a hybrid of Chinese, Malay and Thai, and makes use of lemon grass, turmeric, ginger, chilies, shrimp paste and coconut milk. This eatery boasts a menu full of surprises, with a number of dishes so meta-scary that you must "please asked [sic] server for advise [sic] before you order!!!" What's so intense that you are expected to bother the waiters for a counseling session? Any dish containing chickens' feet, ducks' (webbed) feet, frogs, fish heads or crispy pork intestines. (Don't worry — the menu contains other, more mainstream choices, as well.) Try the delicious beef and chicken satay, the pasembur salad or the shrimp puff (breaded shredded shrimp wrapped up in bacon and fried until golden brown) to start. For entrées, the rice dish nasi lemak is a nice smattering of flavors and textures. The house special squid with lemon grass, ginger and soy sauce is also good. Open daily, 11:30 a.m.-1 a.m.
