Rx

American, West Philadelphia/University City

Here's a prescription for chasing away the winter blahs: Hike up to the old apothecary. It's no longer a drugstore, but a witty little restaurant/takeout spot fittingly named Rx. The escargots are a huge serving of plump snails and shiitake mushrooms, lightly touched with cream and served in a puff pastry triangle. A great bowlful of mussels come bathed in a coconut milk Thai curry broth. In a restaurant dedicated to free-range chicken, organic vegetables and more than a few vegetarian specialties, they do not hesitate to drop a bit of cream into their sauces or use Plugra butter. Rx is fun. You can't say that about too many places, but here there's such a good feeling of discovery, of experimentation, of wishes fulfilled, that you can't help but join in. And the fact that the food is very good, and very well-priced, doesn't hurt a bit.

The food may taste delicious but you won't hold on to that sentiment for too long. We had a large group there on Sunday and 5 people have now been in bed for 3 days with food poisoning. Stay away from their hollandaise sauce.

I second that emotion. This place is negligent.

Hmm..."negligent" seems overly harsh. I eat at Rx and always experience excellent food and service. Their fixed price menu during the week is a great deal. They have the best calamari that I have ever had, outside of Greek coastal towns, and I will cry if they ever take it off the menu. I drag my family and friends there on a regular basis and they always enjoy their food. I don't eat fish but my meat is always appropriately cooked and utterly yummy. Nothing has ever arrived at the table spoiled or curdled. The wait-staff are great and always willing to assist. The dining area and the bathroom are clean.

I doubt that any restaurant, no matter how many stars they have, can ever escape the specter of possible food poisoning. I have never experienced food poisoning at Rx, and, trust me on this, if there is food poisoning to be had, I am the girl to get it. Food poisoning takes about 6-8 hours after ingesting the spoiled food and lasts for about 24 hours or so. If someone was ill for 3 days, it sounds like a sick friend shared their tummy flu along with their hollandaise sauce.
