Kilimandjaro Restaurant

4317 Chestnut St.
215-387-1970

Senegalese, West Philadelphia/University City

Kilimandjaro specializes in Senegalese cuisine and other dishes out of West Africa. They serve lunch and dinner, with specialties like thieboudienne (fish stew over rice) and sauce feuille. (Literally "leaf sauce," it is traditionally meat cooked with the leaves of indigenous plants. Here, it's lamb combined with spinach and palm oil.)  The adventurous can try soupe yelle, made with cow's feet and fresh vegetables, washed down with bissap, the hibiscus flower tea that's the national drink of Senegal.

  • Average entree under $10
  • Takeout menu

Comments

The thieboudienne was great, with peppery tomato couscous and little meatballs. Service was attentive, and the restaurant was cheerful and lively, full of West Africans.

Just one big puzzle: why the heck is a Senegalese restaurant named "Kilimandjaro"?
