Raquel Guzman is a 32-year-old attorney living in Center City who usually shoots 35mm slide film but recently began shooting in a digital format. The series shown was photographed in Rittenhouse Square at night during the recent February snows. "I’d been having my slides digitized onto CD-ROM so that I can work with them on computer, but this series really illustrates the value of the new digital format. A nighttime snow scene would have been difficult to meter using slide film. LCD preview on my digital equipment confirmed that the images were working, and I was able to uncross my fingers regarding the exposure and work on composition."
Guzman spends most of her non-attorney time working on her photographs and web design. She has received awards for her work in a number of competitions, most recently for a portrait entitled "Zocalo Dancer," which won Grand Prize in Frommer.com’s Photo Contest for January. More examples of her work can be seen at www.fivegirl.com.
Technical: "Rittenhouse Snow" was shot using an Olympus D-460Z digital cameral using Smartmedia storage. The images were then developed using Microsoft Picture It software to crop, add contrast, de-colorize and filter to give an ethereal feel.
