 Just Manny Being McGwire?

In news sure to lead today’s SportsCenter, Manny Ramirez has been suspended 50 games for PEDs.

First thought: Whoa.

Second thought: This makes sense: once again something too good to be true (Manny’s epic postseason run) is, in fact, too good to be true. Now Manny joins Barry Bonds, Marion Jones, Lance Armstrong, Mark McGwire, Floyd Landis, Roger Clemens and all the rest as a cheater. As someone who did something humans can’t do … and then we found out why. At this point why doesn’t baseball just take a 50-game breather? I kinda hate sports again.

God, if we find out Phelps or LeBron are doping I’m switching to becoming a knitting fan.

Third thought: $10 says he pulls a Sosa and pretends not to understand English at the presser.

These Aren’t Your Slightly Older Brothers’ Eagles Anymore

The Philadelphia Eagles better be awesome next year.  This morn just let another long term vet walk without a clear replacement plan. As of this morning, Tra Thomas is the latest now ex-Eagle to walk away from and leave the Birds without a clear replacement. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he’ll guard David Garrard’s blind side for the immediate future.

That sucks.

The numbers of the deal haven’t come out but they aren’t really important – by all accounts the Eagles never seriously pursued the big left tackle. Thomas remains productive (he gave up two sacks in the Eagles pass happy offense all of last year) and genuinely wanted to stay, its a shame the Eagles never appeared to make a strong effort to ensure that he did. Best of luck to him in Jacksonville.

Is Elton Brand the new Jeff Ruland?

The Sixers, coming off a first-round playoff exit, added an all-star big man coming off an injury. The big wasn’t an old guy and the Sixers simply assumed the injuries wouldn’t be a problem – they believed they had found the missing piece. This was 20 years ago, and guy was Jeff Ruland.

When the Sixers first signed Elton Brand Frank Fitzpatrick compared it to the Ruland signing (the story is no longer available online) but pretty much everyone quickly dismissed it as Little Chickening. Now, as John Finger points out, it’s looking more and more legit.

Money quote:

It’s too early to know if Brand’s time as a Sixer will mirror Ruland’s. Besides, sports medicine, training and rehabilitation has advanced light years since Ruland broke his foot in the mid-1980s.

“I’ve heard some people say, ‘Is he injury prone?’ Well, I guess I have to get the dictionary out,” general manager Ed Stefanski said. “From the replay, I don’t see. I’m prejudiced obviously, but for a guy to bring down an NBA player full force on his shoulder is not injury prone.”

Yes, that’s true. A hard fall in the heat of an NBA game doesn’t necessarily make a guy a perennial injury risk and it’s very unlikely that Brand’s career is anywhere close to being over.

But none of that helps the Sixers this year.

Yikes.
