Has Allen Iverson become Will Bynum?
![]() |
Last night the Detroit Pistons stunned the Boston Celtics, 105-95, and did so with former NBA MVP Allen Iverson on the bench with injury. It was Piston’s second win in as many games after dropping eight straight, and their second straight game with AI on the pine.
Tomorrow, Iverson is scheduled to return to the court, but reportedly his stay away from the starting lineup is far from over. We haven’t heard a response from the Iverson camp, but the move has to come as a shock to the one-time franchise player. When asked what the star guard’s role would be when he did return, Pistons head coach Michael Curry mused that “Maybe Allen comes in and plays a lot of time at Will Bynum’s spot.” Last night Bynum played 12 minutes of backup PG.
On a practical level it’s hard to argue with the move – the Pistons haven’t been able to effectively work with Allen, and because he’s obviously not in their long-term plans it makes some sense for them to cut their losses and relegate the high scoring guard to the bench – but it still just doesn’t feel right, especially on the heels of Brian Dawkins‘ departure.
