Is Marvin Harrison a Bad Person?
![]() |
For years Marvin Harrison basically stayed out of the public eye. He was frequently cited as a “good guy” receiver, someone who shut up, played football, caught touchdowns, then politely walked off the field. In an NFL besieged with T.O.’s, Chad Johnson’s, and Joe Horn’s, he was a breath of fresh air, someone who pundits could point to and not be upset (naturally they used him as a platform to be upset with others instead, but that is neither here nor there). Recently, however, that has all seemed to change. First he was linked to a shooting outside of Playmakers, his north Philly bar, a situation which has only become more unclear as time has moved on, and now he’s essentially spitting in the face of his longtime employer, the Indianapolis Colts.
Over the weekend Harrison publicly refused to take a paycut despite a sharp drop in production and a league leading $13.4 million dollar cap figure. Today he’s asked for his outright release. Over at FanHouse, Matt Synder looks at what it all means:
Marvin Harrison is either delusional or incredibly selfish.

Make no mistake about this, it’s a complete slap in the face to the organization who has treated him so incredibly well over these years. There were many of the opinion — including myself — that the Colts should have just cut him right away. Instead, they tried to work to restructure his deal. They weren’t being unreasonable in the least with this request. His contract, at this point, was ludicrous compared to his market value. They were likely just being loyal as they always have been with him.
FWIW, there have long been whispers around the edges that Harrison will play until his legs fall off because he is, to put it politely, the frugal type. I know that hearing the words “free agent wideout” forces the mind to immediately race to uniting Marv with his college QB back in Philly (Harrison is a Roman grad), but judging from the rumors and his negotiations with the Colts, I don’t know if I’d expect a hometown discount to make it happen.
