Morning Rounds, January 28th
There was once a famous experiment done where two groups of
college students were given options as a break from studying.
The first group
was offered a movie, an event that something like 50% of the students attended. The second group had the option of seeing the same movie,
but also the option of a ‘game night.’ Surprisingly, something like 20% of the
students went to each – a smaller total number than just those who attended the
movie in the first group. There were kids who would have attended the movie who
were convinced to stay in because of the presence of a third option. Apparently, when you offer two options, you fragment the groups, causing less influence upon those who would have gone and might have been on the fence. The takeaway for social organizers? Offer a single option at times they wanted to distract students – or flood them with multiple offers when you wanted them to stay in.
I bring this up because tonight Villanova hosts Pitt at the Spectrum
- which should be epic – and LaSalle hosts George Washington at Tom Gola, which
is a game that features a friend of mine who I’d really like to put on the
record in front of a group of reporters. On a normal day I’d attend either happily.
Today, with multiple options? Well, maybe I’ll just stay in and study.

Three lines on ours:
- Villanova is set to play the last ever college basketball game at the Spectrum
- The Flyers came out of the all star break flat
- and Joe Banner took to the airways to announce, well, nothing.
