Larry Bowa: Troublemaker
![]() |
As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Joe Torre’s soon-to-be-released book about his time with the Yankees is making quite the stir. Apparently Torre claims that Alex Rodriguez had a “single white female” like obsession with New York heartthrob Derek Jeter and that his teammates called him “A-Fraud” behind his back.
If true, that is a pretty damning claim; Rodriguez has spent his professional career battling criticism that he’s soft and doesn’t come up big in big moments, if it turns out that his teammates and former coach agree with the attacks I don’t know if his reputation will ever be able to come back. Sure he was a great player, but he’s always going to be viewed with a “but …”
Luckily for him Larry Bowa, his former third base coach, talked to the New York Post in an attempt to set everyone straight. As you might expect from a Bowa/Post interaction, the former Phillies’ manager little talk did little but fan the flames.
Alex Rodriguez may have been referred to as “A-Fraud,” but it was in jest, says former Yankee coach Larry Bowa.

He added it might even depend on the opponent – that if, say, Toronto’s Roy Halladay was on the mound, the joke might have been, “We might have a little A-Fraud today.”
So the Yankees teased their star player about not being about to hit good pitching? Sounds like a pretty funny ‘joke.’
