Notes From Championship Week

I was down at the NovaCare Complex this morning (along with what I can only
assume is the entire rest of the media … the place was packed) and the
day was surprisingly business-as-usual. Look for the Birds to play a disciplined game
Sunday. If they do, credit goes to Reid
and the vets. One small exception was how both loose and pointed Donovan
McNabb looked. When he was asked
about what turned the team around he responded with talk about how the playmakers
were making things happen. He pointed specifically to Asante Samuel, someone who McNabb
referred to as a “well know playmaker around the league.” It was an obvious call back to his quotes
last offseason about the team needing to add playmakers – expect a few columns
on the subject tomorrow – and a smart way of 5 guiding the public discourse towards 1. a strength of the team
and 2. an example of the organization listening to him with decidedly positive
results.
McNabb also talked about growing older, claiming that he was getting “fine
like wine” as he aged. He went on:
“The cop-out at times is, people say, ‘He’s getting too old,’ or ‘He’s
not able to do the things he was able to do back five years ago. None of us can
do the things we did five years ago — not even you guys.”
McNabb then went on with some good natured shots at the press.
Some of you are writing slower than you did five years ago. The stuff you
talk about in the paper just don’t make sense. … Thirty-two years old is
really not old. That’s really at the prime of your career. Some of you
guys sitting here wish you were 32.
He paused before finishing,
I’ll tell you about it, it’s fun.
He looked like he meant it.
