Donny’s Skin is Probably Still Thin

Every Monday Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Silver pens his ‘morning rush’ column which takes a weekend at the NFL. Silver is smart, informed and generally amusing, so the column is on my post-NFL ‘must read’ this. Yesterday, his lede topic was Donovan McNabb and the criticism he takes. Silver got some quality one-on-one time with 5 and walked away with some good stuff.
“For one to say that I’m not the same anymore, that’s just ridiculous,” McNabb said Sunday after helping the Eagles to a 23-11 upset of the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, setting up an are-you-kidding-me NFC championship game next Sunday between sixth-seeded Philly and the fourth-seeded Arizona Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium. “Thirty-two years old is not old. I mean, come on. Look at Kurt Warner. [The ‘07 Panthers] brought Vinny Testaverde back at [43]. And now they say that I’m a guy who has nothing left – ‘Get rid of him.’ Trust me – I can still play.”
As Silver accurately points out, McNabb really didn’t have to say this and it’s both surprising and telling that he did. Coming off a big victory there were positive stories for days and considering McNabb is a pro when it comes to non answers, he could have easily guided the zietgiest towards championships and redemption. Instead, he harped on what went wrong.
Silver continues:
“I’m gonna get ripped,” [McNabb] said, looking over to teammates DeSean Jackson and Hank Baskett, and a few other amused players dressing nearby. “That is the story of my life. It’s something to talk about: ‘Donovan, what an idiot.’ ”
I don’t think I have much of a larger point – 5 came to ball and will presumably do the same thing next week – but it may be telling that in a week when ‘Eagles win’ is the story Donovan continues to hear nothing but the negatives.

Good point, and I agree with you. See my link for a piece I did which reflects the same sentiment.
Thanks for the posting, and take care.
