Morning Rounds, December 19th
Last night, in a nationally televised
game against Evansville University, University of North
Carolina Forward Tyler Hansbrough became the
all-time leading scorer in UNC history.
Seriously.
He passed
Phil Ford and is now comfortably ahead of guys like Mike Jordan, Big Game Worthy, and the man
who might have single-handedly forced David Stern into the dress code by
rocking a do-rag during a preseason game (true story), Big Smooth Perkins.
Considering that Hansbrough’s greatest talent could probably
be described as ‘hustle’ (that isn’t a slight – when you hustle like Pych T hustles, it absolutely is
a talent), that is kind of surprising – at least when taken at face value. Hansbrough, not Jordan, now owns a record that no one is going to break. That isn’t a fluke. If someone does break the record it won’t be the next Jordan, it’ll be the next Hansbrough.
The combination of incredible scoring acumen and below average NBA athleticism is necessarily rare in a big time college player. Most guys who have the talent to dominate at one level translate well to the next and don’t end up spending four years at big time programs. Those who do are collegiate heroes and end up with the gaudy records. So congrats to TP, and best of luck at the next level – I know you’re the greatest scorer in UNC history … but you’ll need it.
