Is Arena Football Shot Through the Heart?

According to the Atlanta Constitution
Journal, Ron Jaworski, John Francis Bongiovi, Jr., the Philadelphia Soul and the rest of
Arena League Football may be on the brink of collapse.
The future of the
Arena Football League may be in jeopardy according to several reports. One
thing is certain, the league -which includes the Georgia Force - has postponed a dispersal draft and
the start of free agency until further notice. The league will also delay the
release of its 2009 schedule.“The business model for the league is broken,” Colorado Crush
executive vice president Michael Young told the paper. “If the rug is pulled
out from under us, it’s pulled out from under us.”
This comes on a bring last week the
Columbus Dispatch’s report:
The dispersal draft of players from the
defunct New Orleans VooDoo (which folded unexpectedly) has been postponed three
times, the commissioner resigned and hasn’t been replaced and a $100 million
league ownership deal with Platinum Equity that was struck back in October
hasn’t been completed and may be dead.
This obviously isn’t
good news for the league – even if they do survive this particular crisis you have to figure that
they are Living on a Prayer from here on out. I’ll Keep the Faith for now, but I’m guessing
tonight’s sleep isn’t going to feel like a Bed of Roses for the owners and
player personnel. The elite guys will
be wanted whether the league is Dead or Alive but most of the rest the closing
will taste like some Bad Medicine.
At least the Soul, Philadelphia’s own AFL team, will have gone
out in the Blaze of Glory, having won their only championship just last year. When Philly needed a championship they were there for us.
On an unrelated note, Richie Sambora
is totally
ugly.
