Matt Stairs is a Fantastic Person

One of the real joys of following the post WFC Phillies is all the small-town stories that keep pouring in celebrating local heroes. Nearly every day I hear about Shane Victorino being involved in one Hawaiian charity or another and Lou Marson seems to have done more interviews about a playoff run he didn’t play in than he has about the rest of his professional career combined.
The latest of this is from the Bangor Daily News, where Phillies’ left fielder Matt Stairs still helps out coaching the high school hockey team.
Money quote:
But for the time being, he is immersed in coaching. It is his fourth year with the Crusaders.
“Coaching is fun,” said Stairs. “You get back the first couple of days, everyone asks you questions about how it was, what’s going on and what’s this guy like.
“But the good thing about it is when I get here, everyone treats me just like a regular coach. The biggest thing is I’ve been around so long and I’ve played the game for so long, what I try to teach the kids as a positive role model is if you have a dream, anything is possible,” said Stairs, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1989.
There are also some good bits about the epic home run and Philly as a sports town, the entire thing is worth a read.
Also, as an aside: Matt Stairs has 254 (!) career homers. I know I’m comparing across eras here, but that’s more than Hack Wilson or Roberto Clemente. Unreal.
