Morning Rounds, November 18th
Last night, as Trent Edwards sucked his way to three first quarter interceptions, I couldn’t help but wonder if Donovan McNabb would be a good fit for the future Toronto franchise. I’m not sure he would – Edwards has hit a rough stretch, but I have to believe the Bills are committed to him – but the whole situation got me thinking about where 5 might end up when his reign here is over. A short list:
Chicago
McNabb, famously a momma’s boy, is from Chicago, and given their struggles with quarterbacking you would have imagine the two could have quite the honeymoon.
Minnesota
Minnesota is perhaps the most natural fit for McNabb: Brad Childress, 5’s old offensive coordinator, is both the head coach and fighting for his job. After making Jared Allen the highest paid defensive player in the game the Vikings are built to win job and McNabb would be a significant step up from Gus Frerotte, who Childress is having drop back to pass 30 times a game as is.
Baltimore
With a former McNabb coach at the helm in John Harbaugh Baltimore might have headed this list up last year, but after spending a first round pick on the emerging Joe Flacco this one probably isn’t a viable option.
The Rest
There are plenty of awful needs in need of a real, live QB (Detroit, Kansas City, San Francisco, St. Louis) but it’s hard to imagine them investing the money/resources that Donovan would demand. If Farve steps down the Jets could be an option, as could Tennessee if the Titans flame out early in the playoffs.
My point isn’t exactly to try and find a trade destination for McNabb, but rather to point out that after Sunday’s miserable tie I realize that I’ve given up on the Reid/McNabb era and barely even realized it. As recently as earlier this year my mind would never wonder to a ‘which local players would help them’ place while watching an otherwise meaningless game: I was running these scenarios through my head without pausing to consider the fact that he might not be traded, or that he might end his career in Philly. After all the success he’s had here, that’s kind of a shame.
Oh well, what about Miami? They look closer than everyone thought, and Parcells has always been about winning now.
