ESPN + BCS > Barack Obama

The AP is reporting that ESPN has reached a deal with the Bowl Championship Series which allows them to broadcast all BCS games from 2011-2014. The deal for $125 million a year.
The deal is the latest in a migration of high-profile sporting events from over-the-air television to cable. But this marks the first time the decisive game in the major U.S. pro sports leagues or NCAA college football or men’s basketball will be broadcast on cable.
“You’re talking about a situation where we’re seeing more and more sporting events go to cable,” said BCS coordinator John Swofford, the ACC commissioner. “And certainly I think that the college football community, people who truly follow college football, are extremely well tuned into ESPN and see ESPN as in essence for television the home of college football.”
What this deal means, practically, is that you probably won’t be seeing major changes to the structure or format of the current BCS system which lacks a playoff that fans are clamoring for. On Sunday’s edition of “60 minutes” President-Elect Barack Obama promised to “throw his weight around” in an effort to securing a real playoff system, with this deal in place I’m guessing the incoming President’s weight may not be enough.
As my buddy Perfect mused: “I guess I always knew I would hate college presidents, I just never knew it would be about football.”
