Morning Rounds, November 3rd
Yesterday, I was able to sit back and watch the Eagles with a kind of
passive ambivalence I’d have never thought I could muster when the Birds were
on. I didn’t change the channel and I
wanted them to win, but I wasn’t devastated by the awful first quarter. My phone wasn’t chirping in misery from fans
afraid McNabb would never rebound, and I was even able to crack jokes
throughout some of the hard parts. Beyond that, for the first time in a long time, it didn’t matter where I sat,
how I lay, or anything else I did – the Birds were going to win or lose, and I would
either be happy, or fine. My power of concentration wasn’t going to make or break the team, and I’m guessing I wasn’t alone across the Delaware Valley.
For the first time in my life, watching sports wasn’t something
life-or-death. It was a pleasant diversion,
and for that I have to thank the Phillies. As for life-or-death? Well, at least I have an
election to follow.
