Three Tuesday Thoughts on the Cowboys
![]() |
- Roy Williams is going to be the downfall of the
Cowboys. I recently finished Jeff Pearlman’s excellent Boys Will Boys on the 1990s Cowboys dynasty, a book which I’ll have
plenty more thoughts on when the Birds face the Boys near the end of season,
but a major point Pearlman hit home was just how important the Herschel Walker-for-draft picks trade was in building that dynasty. He focused again and again on how Jimmy
Johnson and Jerry Jones (in that order) knew the value of developing talent and
finding the right guys in the draft. Well,
they just threw too many draft picks away for a guy who has had one thousand
yard season, has never had double
digit touchdowns, or been in the top ten in the league in receptions or yard or
ypr. As an Eagles fan I love that trade - The pressure is now on golden boy offensive coordinator
Jason Garrett. Garrett, long tabbed to
take the reigns should Cowboys frontman Wade Phillips, has been waiting for the
Bum’s son to make a crucial mistake so the $3,000,000 coordinator could take
over the reigns. No more. With the addition
of Roy Williams the pressure is on Garrett, who calls their plays, to earn that
paycheck. The team is expected to win,
and expected to do it by scoring points. If they do all credit goes to the talent … if
they don’t, it won’t be Phillips’ fault. - Pacman Jones has he ability to be one of the top
coverbacks in the league. One of the best return men as well. That doesn’t
matter, now he’s a journeyman team cancer who should, and will, struggle to
find work. You get in trouble once? You
got caught. Twice? Maybe you’re young and reckless, three times? You have a
problem, and need help. Four? Five? Six? … That’s not the league, that is not
the system, that is not the watchful eye of the media, that is you. Pacman doesn’t love the game and he’s not
committed to his profession. It didn’t
surprise me in the least that the Cowboys took a gamble on him, but it is now – with this departure – and not before – when he was added - where he helps the team.
UPDATE: I know it is now wednesday, but the thoughts came Tuesday … as did the title.
