Brian Mitchell, the former Redskin/Eagle running back/top 5 return man ever, has retired into the friendly confines of radio. That, in and of itself, isn’t newsworthy at all. From the Birds alone, former wideout Mike Quick sits next to Merrill Reese during Eagles’ radio. Ike Reese and Hugh Douglas are WIP mainstays, Vaugn Hebron is on CSN and Ron Jaworski seems like he’s in charge of ESPN these days. I’m sure I’m missing more. Not the point.

What is noteworthy is when one of these analysts physically challenges a current athlete to fisticuff. Apparently Mitchell, who is an NFL analyst for D.C.’s ESPN radio and their local CSN has been ripping Portis for years – he calls his soft, goofy, classless, etc., all for obvious reasons. Well, on ESPN’s John Thompson Show, Portis decided to fire back. Via the Sports Bog
Portis: We got some haters, and there’s one on this show. He’s so caught up in whatever I do and being negative about it. Man, I really want to know what’s going on….There’s a man on your show who can’t keep my name out of his mouth, it’s always the negativity.”….
Mitchell: ”The next time I see you, I’ll step to you.”
Portis: ”I’m a grown man, you’re a grown man….All your comments over the years, bro, they’re really starting to add up.”
So, so much more ATJ
Mitchell: Listen to me, I will be truly happy if you lead the Washington Redskins, I will be the first man to praise you, but don’t think you can come on this air and talk trash to me like I’m gonna back down. I talk about football, bro.
Mitchell: If you ever want to go to that area, that’ll be the wrong thing you do. Believe that. Believe that.
Portis: You think that I’m gonna back down? I ain’t gonna back down.
None of that comes close the genious of John Thompson though. In trying to calm down the troops Coach uttered this statement:
“I want the two of y’all to cut this crap out. Both of y’all are guys that we’re both proud of, and when you see one another, eat a sausage sandwich, sit back and put your toes up and laugh about this crap.
