Morning Rounds, September 12th
In what seems like too obvious a metaphor for their season,
the Phillies turned to the little-used suicide squeeze to secure their sixth
and final run last night. On paper the
do-or-die play and the run it led to will look insignificant – Brad Lidge came in and retired the only three batters he faced in the 9th – but the Phils needed it. They have struggling with situational hitting and getting runners over. One play rarely actually energizes a team and propels them towards anything more than the next play, but if one play can provide momentum that may have been it.

“I figured I might as well start trying to be a National
League manager” - Charlie Manuel, on the squeeze
Three lines on their world:
- Beanie Wells‘ status was changed to ‘doubtful’ for Saturday’s
OSU-USC showdown - Even without JET’s father around to spice it up, Pats and the Jets
have some history going into Sunday - and Francisco Rodriguez is in the record books
Three lines on ours:
- The Philllies take down the Brewers and climb within three
games of the playoffs - T.O. fans the flames
- and the first little bit of good might have just come out of the Shawn Andrews‘ situation
Phillies, Birds, Sixers, Flyers and more from the Charlie’s day trip to the senior circuit after the jump
what everybody is talking about …
PHILLIES
Bob Ford looks at Ryan Howard’s September hot streak and marvels. You get Ford’s A-game here. READ
John Gonzalez captures the feeling in the Phillies’ clubhouse. I tried to touch on this yesterday (he does it better than I did), but it has been noticeably weird how, to a man, the Phillies don’t seem to be panicked at all. Isn’t this the time to panic a little bit? (I gotta assume the Birds’ bit is sarcasm, T.O. has been running his mouth plenty.) READ
Sam Donnellon says that we should keep telling Jamie Moyer’s story, because it’s just that good. READ
In his notes Zolecki looks at Charlie’s recent comments, gets him to ramble about next season, and more. SKIP
Murphy’s notes break down what this series means to Geoff Jenkins, the possibility of Brett Myers starting Sunday, and more (and even sneaks a ‘teh’ in near the end). READ
Mike Sielski says that this Phillies team just doesn’t have it in them. READ
Randy Miller looks at what Charlie is and is not saying and more about the Brewers’ series. READ
EAGLES
Rich Hofmann reads a wee bit too much into McNabb’s newfound desire to let his playmakers make plays. The Birds have been the best screen team this decade which is a play based on recievers making something happen, and back when 5’s legs were 24,25,26, he was the type of playmaker he is talking about now. SKIP
John Smallwood thinks that the Chad Ocho Cinco situation is working out great in Cinci AND wishes T.O. was still here to “tutor DeSean Jackson“. Yikes. SKIP
Joe Juliano recap’s McNabb’s history at Texas Stadium, fondly recalls 14.1 seconds, then happily says that McNabb will never do it again. SKIP
Ray Parrillo says that Owens is trying to grow up, but it is just not in him. READ
Les Bowen’s notes report that players across the league have embraced Shawn Andrews and that he’s now there for others and then checks in on Lito Sheppard. READ
Paul Domowitch points out that Donovan McNabb has been able to take Philly’s heat and still perform, then ranks the NFL teams 1-32 without providing any rhyme or reason. SKIP
Ed Barkowitz gets DeSean Jackson to talk T.O., but can’t get him to say anything. SKIP
Reuben Frank says T.O. is stirring the pot. SKIP
SIXERS
Andre Iguodala gives back … to his hometown of Illinois. READ
Kate Fagan takes a look at the Sixers’ offseason moves. READ
FLYERS

TODAY and MORE
I’m not sure there is a local check in it, but Paul Hagen’s Friday Baseball column always has a nugget or two that makes it worth reading. And you should probably start getting prepared to see youtr favorite athletes’ blemishes and grey hairs.
As for around here, after going 11-5 against the spread last week we’ll be back
making you money this morning, but because I was up until like three last night
reading local papers (I better get the fucking Oakland pick right … no sane
person would read as much about that game as I just did) they’ll probably be
followed by a couple hours of lull before I head to the game.
As always, feel free to email with
any questions, suggestions, comments or complaints.
