Final Call for Rounds, September 10th
PHILLIES – FISH: THE RUBBER MATCH

The Game:
Down 2.5 in the East and 3 in the Wild Card the talk in the
Phillies clubhouse is all about winning series. Well, this would be a rubber
match – go to work boys. The Phils are
scheduled to miss CC in the four game set with the Brewers coming up, but that
means meaning that he’s throwing today – if they lose a game and he leads them
to victory that’s just as bad, and right now he’s shutting out Cincinnati.
The Phillies have been awful during game days, which some
attribute to dumb luck and others attribute to extracirricular factors.
The Pitchers: Since being recalled at the break Brett Myers
has been throwing out of his skull – going 6-1 with a 1.55 ERA in 9 starts. Since his recall he owns the second lowest ERA
in the bigs (CC, obviously) and has struck out at least eight in his last five
starts.
He’ll try to keep up the hot streak today against Ricky
Nolasco (13-7, 3.56) who hasn’t been too bad himself. Nolasco racked up 51 Ks in Auguest, which set
the Marlins’ record for strikeout’s in a month, and is coming off 7 innings of
one-run ball against the Cards.
The Players: Jimmy Rollins‘ recent steal streak has not only
solidified his position as the most proficient Phillie base stealer of the
modern era (he’s behind three guys who played before 1920 … when they credited
a runner going first-to-third on a single as a SB) but has also raised his career
SB% to 82.9 (290 steals, caught 60 times), which is the third best among active
players (Beltran and Byrnes). He’s 42-44
this year.
The next home run Jorge Cantu hits will give the Marlins
four infielders with 25+ homers. It will
be the first time in major league history that a team has accomplished that
feat.
The Links
Phillies
Over at The Level, Dan Levy wants the Phils to go-to a starter by committee with Kendrick, Happ and Eaton. If the Phils do turn to this idea it won’t be until Sunday – Moyer is slated to go tomorrow.
In a surprise to no one the Fightins’ have posted the video of Billy Wagner crying
John Finger chimes in on the Mets’ ex-closer
Tim Malcolm looks ahead to Sunday’s starter. I’ll throw some cold water on any Carrasco rumors – he’s our of the country and unreachable.
