About Last Night, September 9th
PHILLIES
![]() |
Phils win in typical laugher/non-laugher fashion. Behind enough offense to get a win with a durably
mediocre Joe Blanton they held off the free falling Marlins 8-6. Scott Eyre threw one pitch and Bob-Dog
Rhoades was in the house. First-rate occasion.
The Game: 8-6 Good Guys.
The Phils scored early and late, which aren’t bad times to score. Nice
to get a win without pitching well. Zolecki,
Murphy, and Mandel were out of the box last night, but let’s see what the
bullpen’s got for you. Cardichi’s recap HERE, Marcus Hayes’ HERE, Kevin Horan’s HERE, Florida’s is HERE, and the AP’s is HERE, with video.
The Heroes: Jayson Werth had the big hit – a three run home
run in the 8th – but the Phils were led by guys who need to lead
them: Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard.
Jimmy had three hits, three steals, scored two runs, drove another one
in, and played excellent D all night; Chase got on base three times and broke
up a potential double-play before the Werth hit; and Ryan got two more across
the plate to increase his MLB lead to 123.
The Race: The Phillies picked up a half game on the idle
Mets, which is big in these scoreboard watching times we live in.
Other Notes …
- With the win the Phils climbed a season high 14 games over
.500. It is the 3rd time this
season they’ve been this high - In his last 17 ABs at CBP JRoll has 12 hits
- Chase Utley has been hit by a pitch four less times than the
Minnesota Twins, and eight less times than the hated Mets - Ryan Howard started a 3-6-1 double play and despite one
miscue actually did not look bad in the field - The Phillies .385 ERA is the 3rd best in the
league - Within like 45 seconds of the game being over Sarge was
holding a wine glass. What a winner - If Hanley Ramirez goes yard once more this season he’ll be
the second Marlin ever to join the 30/30 club.
+8 SC points for the first commenter who names the first.

Whooda thunk it? Preston Wilson
Too bad Chucky Carr didn’t have pop
you must have turned to the internet, because there is no way you could have pulled Preston Wilson off the top of your head
and Chucky Carr … I remember some magazine put a picture of him in a rundown on the cover, presumably because he was the only guy in the majors who still held the advantage in that situation.
I did remember that Preston did have a bust out year and his Roto value shot up the next … but you got me, I did not remember that it was with the Marlins and was a 30/30
I did find out this: http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt3030.htm – before I added Florida to my search
Had to have been the Brett Myers injury/Rod Barajas can’t handle the relay game from last year in Florida as your pic. One of the craziest in recent memory.
that was. Crazy and good for the team – I haven’t seen Pat Burrell that intense in months.
