Last Call Rounds – streaks, brawls and

After last night’s game Uncle Cholly notes that he is “a
firm believer, that you don’t have to have the most talented team, but [if you]
stay after it, somewhere along the line, you’ll get into a streak and you’ll
run off a eight-, 10-, 12-game winning streak.”

The Phillies have yet to have that streak, which either
means that they’re not staying after it, or that they’re due.  If it’s the former they’re fucked, but if it’s
the latter this Nats team might be able to give them the spark they need.

The last time these two teams squared off it almost came
down to a brawl
and then four batters were hit last night so tensions should be high.  I know that right now – two down with 24 to
play, with their ace on the mound facing the worst team in the national league,
the Phillies would do well to focus only on the task at hand tonight – but I
also know the time to coast is just about over and if the Phils look like they need something to snap them into a grove.

If Cole Hamels (11-8, 3.13) wants to be the man he has to go
out and find a way to beat D.C., despite that fact that they he’s facing John
Lannan
(8-12, 3.92) who hasn’t been awful, and the Nats are on fire.

Quick game prediction notes and then blog links from across
Philly ATJ …

  • Washington’s
hot streak has corresponded with Elijah Dukes‘ activation from the disabled
    list.
  • Hamels begged out of his last start after seven innings and
    108 pitches
  • The Phillies have lost both of Hamels starts against Washington 1-0, with the
left-hander boasting a .164 opponents batting average and striking out 17 in 15
    innings
  • Hamels is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA in his last five starts
  • Pat Burrell was awful all August and has been out of the
lineup the last two days as a result.
