Dalembert! Speed Racer! Lawsuit!

I’ve been told I need catchier headlines, I’m guessing that won’t be a criticism of this post.
In a story that gets weirder the closer you look Samuel Dalembert is suing a design called "Art Asylum" over the rights to Speed Racer, despite the fact that neither Sammy nor Art Asylum ever owned said rights.
Here’s what I can gather. Samuel Dalembert invested heavily in the rights to Speed Racer merchandise back in 2006, giving this design studio over a cool mil to help them get some heavy-duty Speed Racer merch into the wanting hands of the public. However, Dalembert is apparently only asking for $50,000 back and the company apparently never owned the rights and doesn’t exist anymore.
In yet another fun twist to this story Dalembert’s shares an attorney, Nino V. Tinari, with jailed former city councilmen Rick Mariano. Tinari’s website both doesn’t work AND brags that the firm has provided reputation for NBA Superstars.
If someone more laywerish can clear up what’s going on here it would be much appreciated.
