Sweetie’s Pie Diner coming this fall

Oct. 1 is the projected opening date for Sweetie’s Pie Diner, an all-pie restaurant (yes!) from Stephanie Thaw and her partner Kathy Tench. Located at 1822 Spring Garden, the 42-seater will be an entirely vegetarian operation, serving both sweet and savory pies in addition to fresh-made salads and soups.
Thaw, who worked as the pastry chef of Friday Saturday Sunday from 1976 to 1989 before leaving for a career in the non-profit realm, founded a wholesale baking operation called Eat Sweet about a year ago. Sweetie’s, she says, is a natural progression for her baking biz. The diner, which’ll be run as a BYOB, will feature all manner of becrusted choices — an heirloom tomato, cheese and roasted garlic pie; a corn and shiitake mushroom tart; vegetarian shepherd’s pie; and lavender, honey and pine nut in a cornmeal crust are just a few of the varieties Thaw has planned.
Thaw will be using organic and locally sourced dairy and eggs for her pies, and hopes that a majority of her produce will be able to be acquired in the region, as well.
Adrienne Shelly would be so proud.









Philadelphia needs a great pie shop. Alas, their vegetarian mission likely means no lard in their pie crusts.

I defy anyone to make a flakier crust than I! The cream cheese pastry is guaranteed to melt in your mouth.
Didn’t mean to dis your pies. Just that, with all this healthy cooking going on nowadays, I struggle to consume my minimum daily requirement of lard.

Stephanie, if you are reading this, I hope that you will consider putting vegan options on the menu. This city needs a good spot for vegan sweet and savoury pies!

while the idea of an all-pie all-the-time estaurant excites me, i am sad to see that there will be no meat pies on the menu. nothing is more delicious in the winter than a steak and kidney pie, a proper shedherds pie or a steak and cheese pie. we need a kiwi or a brit to step up and offer another alternative.
that being said, i am very excited about any savory pie that has tomato, and this woman sounds very talented, so i will take what i can get. but i do love meat pies too.
and as for the sweet pies, i hope they have a counter and good ass coffee!!!

I did not feel dissed at all – I was thinking this could lead to a bake off! That said, I do make a mean pie crust and hope to see you in the spot.
To my vegan friends – there will be plenty of vegan options as well. For the carnivores – I just cannot go there, much to the dismay of my partner!

What part of the building will this establishment be in? There appears to be two commercial spaces on the 19th Street side — one closer to Spring Garden Street and one closer to the Museum Towers Parking lot…

Having been lucky enough to recently sample the tomato, cheese and garlic pie, and no fewer than 8 different sweet pies at Steph and Kathy’s summer pie party, I am thrilled to be in lunchtime walking distance from work to Sweetie’s Pie Diner. Boy, is that lard-free crust tasty!
I hope you can make the chocolate pie that was featured in the movie – it looked great.

Looking forward to Sweetie’s opening up. I saw the sample menu on menupages and was a tad concerned as it seems like the owners really really like mushrooms — 5 of the 6 sample items have mushrooms. I hope they have other options. I also hope they have vegan options for both the savory AND the sweet pies
