Don’t Look an Art Horse in the Mouth: Temple wages old-timey war on art-school competitors

Bookmark and Share
Chilling, menacingly, at PAFA (not UArts — our bad)

Seems like Tyler School of Art is looking to stir something up: We got word this morning that, in an attempt to "end the age of silence," whatever that means, Temple kids have craftily constructed four Trojan Horses out of what looks like cardboard on wheels, and strategically placed them in the lobbies of UArts, PAFA, Moore College of Art & Design and the Art Institute. How they got them in there without getting caught, no one knows.

In classic Greek-trag fashion, Temple's art division seems pissed (or at least fake-pissed) that their reputation isn't as widely known as the other Philly schools (we wonder what left-out PhillyU has to say about this), and they're ready to bust into Troy — er, the local college art scene.

Sez their typewritten manifesto:

"Within the tides and ideals of their own foundations, four rivers have been flourishing in the city of Philadelphia. The fifth river had existed within close proximity until now. Its channel has been rerouted to flow abreast the others and encroach on their territory. We, the students of Tyler School of Art, have been rerouted and relocated. However, our waters are as steady and strong as they have ever been.

Four gifts have been constructed ending the age of silence. As Apollo lifts the sun on the morning of March 18, 2009, these four gifts will be illuminated. On this morning we … declare war against thee and stand by our gates at full attention waiting for the battle to begin."

Philebrity reports that UArts may be on the attack, although we suspect they've got more important things to do today.

So, what say you: Is it just a prank? Complex senior art project? Treat-filled piñata? Or is it truly a cry for recognition that will launch a thousand counter-battles?

Dude, as an Tyler alumni 2000, I have to say this. Those who couldn’t get into Tyler went to Uarts, Moore and the Institute. Nobody goes to the Academy, unless you like painting tea pots and bananas.

That’s some bullshit. Except the last part about the Academy is fairly true

The t-horses have probably already brought them more publicity than they can buy. Good job.

by Not eligible

@ comic d00d

“Dude”, as a Uarts Alumni, I have to say this. you’re an idiot. I wouldn’t threaten you directly or anything, but go hang out just outside the temple campus, it’s totally safe “dude”.

On topic with the article, I was with my Girlfriend that night when they put it in. cause quite a stir and got all the girls excited (Moore). but everyone questioned why they are doing it now. it’s half way through the second semester and no one will have time to really want to do anything back… So my question is… why does Tyler have the time to put together 4 horses? and why now?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little publicity for a college arts program, Not Eligible, but I do wonder what the point is — they seem to be pretty adamant about waging this war, and presumably hoping for some “retaliation,” maybe with the goal of creating a collaborative art movement or something. But as Trowan22 says, isn’t it a little late in the semester for such shenanigans? Also, I don’t know about you guys, but I love painting bananas.

by carolyn huckabay

@ comic d00d

i wouldn’t put yourself on such a high pedestal. while AI isn’t even worth mentioning out of all these colleges, it’s in the same league with tyler. your college is little more than a hub of filthy slackers making arts and craft.

To “mshowa”: You are obviously an idiot. You know nothing of AI’s programs and your ignorance is shown here clearly. Go get an education, moron.

as a pafa student, i can assure you that i havent painted a teapot, nor a banana in some time, and when we retaliate you can expect much better than a poorly constructed cardboard horse.

Art Institutes aren’t even real schools.

by Anonymous

It’s too bad that thus far this has brought on insulting rhetoric about which school is ‘real’ or ‘better’. So the Tyler kids wage ‘war’ - when I read their manifesto letter it’s clear that they are doing it with full respect for and competitive sweet spirit with the other schools - which tells me that what they actually want is some kind of conversation or relation where there was none previously (I’m guessing). And a good old school challenge. I think it’s a simple but also sort of brilliantly funny thing to do - and I really don’t think it’s meant to spark an argument about craft (teapots and bananas) but rather to capitalize on a fantastic thing that we have in this city: a high concentration of great art schools and all the incredible young energy that brings with it. Stop whining everyone - embrace the joy and smart that’s in it: i.e. the art.

by Anonymous

i didnt read all of the comments. BUT hopefully this link can clear some stuff up…

http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/art/search/pmsa+6160

TYLER 14.
UARTS 37
PAFA 58
and AI (not mentioned at all….)

tyler rules!

These comments are rather stupid. Fun fact! Art Institute is a real school, but we’re not Fine Art majors, we’re science majors. This doesn’t make us a “not real art school”, actually Annie Leibovitz graduated from an Art Institute, and one of the students on the MTVU show “Engine Room” is a current student in Philadelphia. We may not paint, but we know what we’re doing.

by Anonymous

hehe. burn the horse. smore time.

to be honest. i dont think art institute kids would even care to retaliate… but then again, i havn’t the slightest pride in my school. i actually think its kinda awesome tyler is making headlines. word.

by Art Institute couldn't care less.

Ummm.. it says TEMPLE not TYLER…

so don’t get it Twisted!

I have to say for all those saying that the Art Institute isn’t a school, I’m sorry you can’t keep up with our busy schedules. No offense but I think every ‘art’ school in the city, associated with another school or not, all have some sort of reputation based on how well the students do. So don’t trash on others just because you don’t like the school they’re going to, obviously your just jealous of the higher education some are getting. Give it a rest, jealousy is never attractive no matter how well you play it.

Seriously, I am a student at the Art Institute and I dont know about anyone else no matter what school you go to, but I know I dont have the spare time to sit around making horses and sneaking them into other schools.

Nice job Tyler School of Art, the trojan horse you’ve placed in The Art Institute faculty offices was a treat, and gave most of us a great laugh (minus the administration). Since we have finals 4 times a year, as oppose to twice, and are currently IN finals week, we are so glad you find time to amuse us.
Please forgive us, if the senior class doesn’t have the time to retaliate to make this massive cardboard cut-out of yours, and figure out a game plan to sneak in your school, as we are graduating and starting careers within the next few weeks. I’ll be sure to remember this moment, for my kids, should they decide to apply to an art school. I’ll remember, which one will allow them the most time for such antics.

by AI Student

what an anonymous poster said exactly
” ..it’s clear that they are doing it with full respect for and competitive sweet spirit with the other schools - which tells me that what they actually want is some kind of conversation or relation where there was none previously… ”

all i’ve seen is negative responses to the horses, and what wrong with cardboard? everyone should chill out a bit

Current Tyler Student-Bridget

Thank you Tyler for making us a cute horsey!! :D

by Awesome AI Student

I was totally serious, my friends and I thought the prank was hilarious, and yes, totally harmless. I meant nothing mean by what I commented earlier, just that we really don’t have the time to retaliate (in a long-winded, sarcastic, dry humorous way). The horse was genius on Tyler’s part.

by AI Student

Oh, please. Enough with who has the busier schedule. Working your ass off doesn’t necessarily make you a professional. If you’re good at what you do, you’re home and in bed at a reasonable hour. You’re all just sad cause you didn’t think of ways to get your school noticed first. It’s pathetic you’re getting so upset.

This person talks as if he/she were the mastermind behind the whole thing… I highly doubt you even had anything to do with it EVEN if you were from Tyler. Pretty sad really… having pride and ownership of an idea that you had no part in!

by Awesome AI Student

wow this guy. getting our school noticed? wow… whos the angry dude here. yea, you got your horses in our schools. big woop. from my 3 years at ai, i’ve yet to witness any rivalries when it comes to our surrounding art schools… and if so, its all out of good fun.

and here comes tyler, in which we have no beef at all, and you guys try to make this big scene upon your arival at temple campus by putting horses in our schools and saying your declaring war? sheehs… whaetver. talk about needing attention.

geez. now that you guys are here, congrats! and get on with your art education like everybody else. i think UArts might retaliate though… and maybe Moore… but i dont see AIs students forming any retaliation groups at all.

by Art Institute couldn't care less.

omg everyone needs to relax! it’s all in good fun.

Hi haterz

by John Kutlu

aww tyler just want to fit in, its ok you’ll be like a little brother to us other art schools…terrible timing though cause at Ai it’s finals week and we actually do real work and dont have time to be making shitty cardboard horses, plus by the time the semester is over it will be forgotten about anyway. we’re not in high school any more, you already had your chance for senior pranks

by Ai student

@ mshowa:
We may be slackers but even slacking off and half asleep we still can design, make, and publish better shit in 24 hours than you at the AI can in 24 months.

Oh and by the way to everyone who thinks that they’re better than Tyler, you’re not. Don’t get angry about it, it’s just simple fact.

Ok, people, bottom line? School rankings don’t mean jack. A school could be placed high on a list as a whole, but there could be specific departments within that institution that are absolutely horrible. That’s why when you choose a school, you research the program you’re looking to go into. For example, UArts has a few better programs than PAFA and PAFA has a few better programs than UArts. It’s not some stupid list that illustrates the entire picture at stake.

This whole “school waging war” nonsense is absurd. Shut up, go to class, stop whining, do your work, create your thesis, graduate and shut up some more. If you think some website ranks a school on a list, it means that’s the deciding factor at what school is “better”? That’s incredibly idiotic. You make the most out of your own education, not some census attendant.

Oh, and lastly… shut up, stop crying, no one gives a damn what you think, BenD, comic d00d and tyler.. The fact that you’re trying to place yourself above anyone else simply causes you to look pretentious, insecure and pathetic. Nice going there, chief.

-EB

I am not one to flaunt my school, but I think Tyler wins just for making everyone act like a prick on the internet. Knowing Tyler, it was supposed to be fun, and it is fun to see everyone get riled up, like art kids have sports egos or something.

by Tyler Student

Who gives a shit what art school you go to? Good luck getting a job when you graduate.

by Anonymous

As a current Uarts student, a majority of us thought it was hilarious and wish they had placed the horse somewhere other than the court so it could stay! Unfortunately they placed it in the middle of a charity show happening that day so it needed to be disassembled.
Tyler, we welcome you back into the city, for most of us have no idea where your campus was before. Lets have a kickball tournament instead of a flame war on the internet.

by Anonymous

That picture isn’t from Uarts.

by Anonymous

Forgetting whether it was a genius idea, or stupid prank, the heart of the matter is that in collaboration there is strength. Sure AI has great students, U Arts has great students, Moore has great students, PAFA has great students, and Tyler has great students. With the combination of group work in Philadelphia, we could make a stir among the masses. Not saying anything in particular, but being noticed for what we do, create work, talk about work, or study work (and many other sides) Forget the half hearted comments of who the top school is, frankly as a student myself i don’t think that matters. Skill is only nurtured in school, not created.

Why not meet City Hall some time (after finals and classwork) and have a debate, have improv night, bring materials and create. Maybe it’s not your thing, but you will learn from your environment and influence your work. War does not bring the right notion to this installment, more like a call to arms, US vs Them! The ones that don’t even know any of us exist. Continue your cramped studio lives if you must, but i for one feel a Philadelphia revolution

What an odd article to write with such a stance.

One simple question, Isnt there enough war already?
Art is much more enlightened than that- hopefully art students everywhere will come to understand that. For by practicing it they will be too.

The future is in your hands, make it what you want. Enlighten yourselves and world with the gift of art.

Having seen the horsey how DARE Tyler put themselves in the same league as the other Schools…. Even AI could produce a better sculpture. Thank you for lowering the bar!

by lowering the bar you mean — four 12 foot horses?

We loved the trojan horse at uarts. It’s definitely a provocation. I wish people would stop the ridiculous comparisons. it’s SO not relevant - this isn’t football, and really, this is not war. i agree with the person who said that this is a super funny and sweet gesture in the guise of war. hey - you’re being poked! get it? have fun with it. start a conversation. do you know how great this could be? it’s up to you. you can be angry and lash out or you can join in on the fun. i know where i’d want to be in that.
Thank you tyler for starting something. i hope that the schools involved can show that they are capable of playing with others.

by listen....

The photo in the story in not at UArts. Check the Philly Weekly’s blog if you want to see that one.

My bad, guys — fixed the caption. It’s actually PAFA.
So, AI/Moore/PAFA/Uarts people: Is a counter “attack” in order, or are you too busy/close to graduation to participate?

by carolyn huckabay

I think the most difficult part of any retaliation effort by the four schools targeted by this prank will not be in organizing the effort, but in figuring out where exactly Tyler’s campus is located.

its called google

unless you’re too scared to go into scary north philly

HAHA this is so pathetic. we are a bunch of art students and now there is this rivalry? we don’t have sports teams so we have to resort to a rivalry that consists of sculptures in others lobbies? we are probably a joke to other “real schools” even more then ever now.

Rivalry is not the right attitude, nor is calling this “war”. Some people here are getting the right idea, and I’m sure more than enough people at these schools will as well, and it’s from there that something great could be born. Where is the growth in art without some healthy competition? There isn’t rivalry as much as there is kinship, and it’s in that spirit that this invitation of growth stems. Relish an opportunity to not only compete with each other, but with an entirely different school, because you won’t always have this chance. It’s good, it’s fun, and it’s productive to all of us.

let’s make giant dinosaurs and flock them and parade them around philly….!!!!!

only tyler kids know what flocking is cause they’re so much smarter than other art schools.

where’s moore’s “responce” to this? and “relocated” and “rerouted” have two different meanings, moore morons.

Someone should deconstruct their school’s horse, reshape it into a giant bottle of Elmer’s Glue and ship it to the P.O. Box or whatever forwarding address Temple has for Tyler…

lame.

I’m going to shove your stupid idea in a glue bottle!!

common guys Art intstitute shouldn’t be getting such a bad wrap here….

Four 12 foot horses in 24 hours seems pretty good to me. But that’s besides the point, since the people who did it were trying to instigate some fun, inter-school art. So I really don’t see how perfect craftsmanship fits into the whole picture, especially when so much is done in so little time. I see nothing in their statement that says they think they’re better. And if you think contemporary art is judged by craftsmanship, you’re living in the nineteenth century.

I totally agree with what “listen….” said. This is supposed to be fun! And I sure hope there ARE accordions involved. :-)

by Middle-Aged Grown-Up

In the advertising industry it’s said that even bad publicity is good publicity and from all the point/counter-point blogging I’ve see on this site, I’d say good job Tyler!

by Anonymous

that horse looks lame. shoot it.

by the horse whisperer

My friends and I ate alot of mexican food and we have alot of flaming bags of shit that are being delivered to TYLER. We heard they are hungry for shit.

Who said anything about four horses in 24 hours???? If you visit the Tyler site blog thing they have an entry with 3 photos of the trojan horses dating back to March 2nd…

YES! There will be a “counter attack” from the Art Institute of Philadelphia! :)

But in the spirit of good fun, healthy competition, the art community of Philadelphia, and to represent!

To Tyler Students: We liked the trojan horse and the well written note that came along with it! We accept your friendly “war” cry and we will bestow upon you a gift of our own! ;)

by Christopher from AiPH

Some guy, you’re a loser. Get your facts straight before you speak up. And those horses were made last week in 12 hours, not 24.

Re: tyler:]
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/art/search/pmsa+6160

The Art Institute of Philadelphia offers Undergraduate studies… Which explains why they are not listed in the “Grad School Rankings”. Sorry! Try again!

Too bad that’s not what a Trojan horse is. A Trojan Horse is allowed inside, not snuck passed apathetic guards and lower to middle management employers inside and assembled in pieces. Get it? You have to present a huge horse as a gift and have it be allowed entry. Tyler kids should have built huge viruses. It’s OK though, you can’t expect art students to know this…

BRAVO! I like how they did it to four schools at the same time. The feat itself was cool. AIPH students now feel like they’re getting taken seriously because they were pranked with the other colleges.

Hey Anonymous, why don’t YOU get your facts straight before speaking!?!?!

http://tylerstudentlife.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/153/

Officially from Tyler School of Art itself!! Look at the date… March 2nd… Last week HUH?!?!? March 2nd was over 2 weeks ago… the FACTS speak for themselves… IDIOT!

by Christopher from AiPH

Again, awesome feat! I love the idea of building some sort of idol or icon of their school at the other schools but that attached letter was straight up gay. I’m sure there were Tyler students among the group who thought the horse was enough, but shame on the person who wrote the letters. OK I’m going to go back to being affected by the recession now. You guys enjoy your art.

THEY WERE BUILT IN 30 HOURS AND THE REASON THEY WERENT DELIVERED UNTILL THIS WEEK WAS BECAUSE THE OTHER SCHOOLS WERE ON SPRING BREAK AND THEN WE WERE

DUH

I think the comment by “Me” typed run-on, in ALL CAPS pretty much proves the point made about art students lacking in the brains department. All those drugs…

Shoulda built something else.

who cares how long it took to build? are you trying to brag that it only took 24-30 hours to build those magnificent works of art?? **sarcasm**

Troy had the attack of the Greeks, Center City art schools have the attack of the Geeks.

I would like to just state, if you go by entrance requirements, the Art Institute does not require any kind of portfolio to show artistic aptitude. Anyone can sign up regardless of their skill. Also, they are not accredited. These are the reasons that people are talking trash on the Art Institute, the standards just aren’t there.

Also, has anyone considered that this might have been a project for a 3D class? All this talk of the students having too much time on their hands is silly.

Kudos Tyler!! Very innovative.

didn’t read all of the comments, but
Anonymous is right.
As a student of Tyler,
It’s all about stirring it up.
We mean no harm, Its honestly just about getting collaboration going.

but whats more interesting is how upset everyone is becoming over this.
that’s the real art in all of this…

by Anonymous

as awesome as it is, its sad to hear it was by tylor…artist should never be against each other. as artist we should encourage and support, not act as fools. i was a former Ai student, but i dont support Ai at all never have and have no respect towards Tylor.

“Too bad that’s not what a Trojan horse is. A Trojan Horse is allowed inside, not snuck passed apathetic guards and lower to middle management employers inside and assembled in pieces. Get it? It was allowed in. There was a meeting at Pafa the day before it happened, they even made the entrance hall look nice because they were probably anticipating photos. Our schools are eating up all this free publicity we are giving them by bickering. Aren’t we paying them enough? Grow up; either have fun with it, or ignore it, yea?

P.s. Tyler, Its Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts, not Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art. If you want to declare war, at least know who you are declaring war against.

As a person who’s been to both U-Arts and transferred to PAFA all I have to say is who gives a crap!

This was awesome! We don’t have any sports teams or any other way of FRIENDLY competition. Being an athlete “back in the day” it was that sort of fun that was motivating and exciting. It pushed the team to want to do better. This, I felt, was an encouraging push to have fun, but kick some ass. Thank you Tyler for getting this connection going! it was a great idea and I’m glad it was followed through!
:)

I think everyone needs to stop taking this so seriously- It’s obviously a very creative and friendly prank an a great way for all the art schools to participate in something together. Also, I’ve been to three art schools in the past few years (two of the ones which Tyler waged “war” on- Moore and AI) And I will state as fact that it is fucking retarded for art schools to claim superiority over other art schools. It really is the pot calling the kettle black. ART SCHOOLS ARE ALL THE FUCKING SAME full of some creative people, lots of untalented people, and even more people that need to get over themselves.

by Chelsea Rae

Everyone from Rome is going nuts about this stuff, guys. Looks great from over here!
Sadly, though unable to partake in such a delightful experience, I am in Rome (god, poor me) and can only enjoy sticking my face in every blog/youtube site I can find.

I’m going to copy and paste this message by Anonymous in hopes that more people read it:

The school works in a strange Darwin-esque way. Our graduating classes are very small, and by time you make it to the final quarter, it’s the best of the best showing work. Accreditation means jack unless you plan on transferring to a grad school, which is pretty unnecessary unless you plan on teaching. I can only speak for my own department, which is graphic design, but the individual portfolios of each graduating group for the quarter is really impressive. The standards are here, but you really wouldn’t know that by googling some information about AI and trying to sound like you know what’s going on.

I don’t care that Temple/Tyler put up a horse in Ai, I do mind that Now it makes it difficult for ME to get into the school for the Open Drawing class. If you’d had put it anywhere but the records room it might not have been so bad. I (and a few other alumni) had to wait for a current student to go get the teacher that runs it in order to get in. Now they only allow Alumni to go in the building on weekends. Thanks a lot Tyler for ruining life for the Ai alumni.

by Ai alumni Pebbz

in class yesterday morning we all found out about this t-horse and i thought it was hilarious and actually kinda rediculous that Tyler got it in our school with the tight security that chases after you if you forget to scan your ID. everyone is over reacting in these comments and honestly the majority of AI could care less. There was a sort of mystery among some of the others in my class as to how Tyler got the horse in there. If this is some way of Tyler raging a “war of the arts”, which one kid in my class thought and wanted to retailiate, then get a life. Like said any times before AI studets honestly dont have time to plan something like that. I honestly dont know anything about Tyler but AI goes year round with 4 11 week quaters a year. Our deadlines need to be met and many times the deadlines are hard to meet so we’re always busy. So sorry that we get a bachelors degree in 3 years if Tyler has to go for four. Again i dont know if thats true so if its not thats my bad. All and all i found the whole thing funny and i give Tyler props for that.

by AI found it amusing

I wish I had the spare time and money to make big cardboard animals. Wait… No I don’t. All you need to get into art school anymore is money. Talent is a foreign word these days. Bring your cardboard horse to NYC art schools and see what kind of feedback you recieve.

Congratulations, you got the attention you were looking for! Unfortunately, all you’re known for now is the construction of a cardboard horse. How do you expect us to take you seriously when you’re sneaking into our schools and playing pranks? Maybe we’d know who you were if you were famous for your quality of work.

by Ai student

I commend Tyler for acknowledging a connection between the art schools of Philly. We are part of this art community together and we need to work together to show our city what we’re made of. As for everyone who says they have no time to retaliate… excuses. Make the time. Let it begin.

by moose womyn

“where’s moore’s ‘responce’ to this? and ‘relocated’ and ‘rerouted’ have two different meanings, moore morons.”

Where did all of the hostility towards Moore come from? I don’t believe I see one Moore student with a negative or immature response. Yes, it is spelled r-e-s-p-o-n-s-e. We embrace this challenge and congratulate Tyler for being the first to act. We women will retaliate with power, because we love a challenge.

you guys. all this arguing is dumb. Philly is a special city because of all the art schools!
I graduated from Tyler before it moved to its new location. we had a wonderland up in elkins park. but we did feel very isolated; which we embraced! all that space! all that freedom! I’ve been wondering for years why there has never been communication and commraderie between the art schools of Philadelphia; its such a unique situation we all have here. We meet eachother all over the city post graduation, working the same jobs and becoming fast friends. Now that they’ve been moved downtown I’m PROUD of Tyler for reaching out! SPARKING people’s interest and passion! Look how riled up everyone is! I’m sure there have been numerous attempts at communication between the students of all the schools before to little effect. These Tyler students thought of just the thing that no one would dare ignore or brush off for another time! brilliant. done with sparkling respect and good spirit.
Go up and read RUPERTS post, everyone. he’s got the right idea here.
All of philadelphia’s art schools are great and unique to themselves. graduates from each go on to do wonderful things; its high time they got to know eachother so that they can take advantage of their proximity and collaborate with their strengths.

by your friend

C’mon, Philly, where’s the love?

To the person who posted the school rankings from US News & World Report (3/18/09 at 8:26pm): did you realize that this is a ranking of GRADUATE PROGRAMS and not the art schools in their entirety??? If you read the methodology of how they do their rankings, they actually only looked at MFA programs. This is why Art Institute isn’t on the list. PAFA only offers one MFA, UArts offers two and Tyler has eight. Hence the reason Tyler “ranks” higher. The rankings were calculated based on a survey of students. Since Tyler has more programs, they obviously have more students who were surveyed, which means more survey responses, and ultimately a better ranking.

Regardless of rankings, the bottom line is that each of the art schools in Philly has talented students who contribute to the arts community in their own way. Rather than starting a “war” of which school is better and which students are better artists, this Trojan Horse experiment could really blossom into an amazing inter-school collaboration. This is what I hope to see!

by Art Student Supporter

I give major kudos to tyler even though i go to Uarts. i thought the idea was very clever and they are right, the art schools of philadelphia dont really converse at all. academic colleges have sports and a lot of academic clubs that compete with other schools. Art schools don’t really do that. i know i am excited about some art school competition between the students of the arts. this should be fun and interesting. Tyler welcome to the Avenue of the arts. we will make sure you feel at home ;)

you guys are fools if you think the art institute isn’t a legit school. granted, they’re far from the best schools out there, but i’m being taught by people who are currently in the business. hell, one of my teachers did backgrounds for Spirited Away.

to whoever decided to do this, you didn’t do a very good job at getting this out in the public’s eye. i JUST now found out about this stuff and i currently go to the art institute. frankly, i can guarantee you almost nothing will happen. it’s finals week, none of us have any interest in spending time working on anything that isn’t our finals we care about the quality of our work, not some stupid feud between art schools.

my opinion: someone got bored and didn’t want to do their work, so they made some horses and left them places. big deal, no one cares.

Is it just me, or are the most negative comments from the AI kids? Why the animosity?

AI kids are upset because they’re wasting their time and money. They’re too dumb handle regular college work and other art school’s won’t accept them.

Props to Tyler for the thought they put into this declaration of “war”. Know that Moore is plotting to retaliate. We are better, smarter, and we kick ass. Duck and cover, Tyler, we’re dangerous.

Hum, that’s highly negative of you to say. Some of us enjoyed the prank! Unfortunately, it is true that while retaliating may be fun, we really don’t have the time. I definitely give props to Tyler for the horse and the thought put behind it. And yes, most of my friends and I think that it was done in a respectful and friendly way. There is NO reason however, to put down AI. The Art Institute has really offered me the best in its programs. So sorry you think we are a load of crap, but we actually have a rigorous program. AND school, is only what you MAKE OF IT.

Great job though Tyler, the horse was truly appreciated by most of us.

i thought we go to art school because we are fun people. wheres the love?

So, I have looked over these posts and laughed. The idea of a college war has always been stupid to me. I am an alum of The Restaurant School At Walnut Hill College and there has always been a little war between them and the Art Institute for those who want it. My fiancee goes to Moore College of Art and Design and she told me about the horse. I have to admit that it was funny until she said the Tyler kids walked it right in with no issues. That made me angry. Moore is an all womens school and they have tight security to protect them or so i thought. They didn’t try to stop these kids.

Anyway. Tyler, if you want to start a war with these Moore Women go right ahead. They are artistic geniuses and will stop at nothing until they win. I have seen first hand the beautiful masterpieces they create and they are amazing. Some I have no words for. For those people that say Moore is for the people that couldn’t get into Tyler, remember that it is the first and only Women’s college in the US and only the best of the best get to go.

I mean.. I don’t actually understand why there is any hostility. I go to uarts and didn’t even hear about it till today because it wasn’t a big deal.. funny, yes.. threatening, no.. stop all your fucking whining.. it’s not like it was a personal attack at you as a person so there is no point in getting all huffy about it.

Aww come on. It was a good idea…and it’ll get the non-schoolwork creativity flowing…something that all art school people need.

It really doesn’t need to be a competition about who has the bigger dick…really.

(but AI does stink…omg lyke jk omfg lolzzzz!!!)

My daughter told me about this so-called “War” and I had to give a chuckle. She is a student at Moore College of Art and Design. It reminds me of my days in college. The biggest issue I have with this situation is what this gentleman above named Jim said. If the students from Tyler walked into the school unchallenged, than I have problems with the security at Moore.

At my daughter’s freshman orientation the Dean spent what felt like twenty minuets talking about how tight the security was at the school and no one gets past security without proper identification and/or staff or students guiding them. I was told these Tyler students walked in and security just watched. Either I am overreacting and someone knew this was going to happen or they just didn’t care. Either way I am a little upset.

I think this is tyler trying get noticed honestly i didnt even know temple had an arts school not to mention all of the temple students i chill with dont even acknowlage it as a part of their campus and are far from satisfied with them moving into theirs really tyler? deal with your own problems in more peacful way making friends isnt very hard to do you know
p.s. the trojan gimmick was allready used a million times before so much for an “arts school” being “creative”

by ai student

Ah, such petty motives. While the students at Tyler may have the extra time to do arts and crafts to try to gain the public eye, AI students have finals. Again.

Last I checked we get them about every 13 weeks during the year, so yeah. No time for us to go and play useless things when we have work to do. You guys may get the art degree, but we get science degree’s. As such we have to go and get some real work done.

Hey my school gets a mention! (Even if we’re officially known as PhilaU not PhillyU)

But to answer: I think we’re used to being left out. We are a design and science school not really a fine art school. People who know us know we do good stuff, but we seem to keep to ourselves. I don’t really know much about the other schools because this one has one of the best reps for my major in the country so I didn’t look anywhere else.

But all of this activity excites me and I wish there was a way that we could get involved without looking like the forgotten losers. I guess I would just have to say that PhilaU is the best and that those horses are pathetic. Did you base your plans off the IKEA ponies? Sorry you’re too scared of our skillz to even mess with us.

Oh and we do exist and we are in the East Falls area. Google us if you don’t know.

PAFA RESPONDED…
it kinda sucked to be honest

@rebeccawilson.

“Take it to the nyc art schools”

Are you serious? I went to an art school in NYC and there’s just as much crap coming out of them as there are any other school. The only difference is that it’s OOoooOh a big and fancy city. The schools are also ridiculously expensive.

I liked PAFA’s response, especially addressing it to the “Temple School of Art”, an obvious jab to the declaration mis-titling them the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts.

The severed horse head was smile worthy, especially seeing that was just a “taste” of what’s to come. Not sure what school dropped that off.

All in all, this is a lot of fun for everyone, and shame on those with all the negativity.

@ fucktemple. Plz do not associate whatever those Tyler kiddies did with Temple. So fuckTyler.

Truth be told, I would say there is a vast population of Temple students that loathe the Tyler kids. Feeble attempts have been made on our own campus by them to get noticed. Also, Temple built them an expensive beautiful new building and all they could do is complain about making the switch to main campus. Spoiled. Their artwork looks quite elementary as well. I say, kick them back to their commune. Or even better: Temple rid themselves of Tyler and put the money towards real academics, towards people who would appreciate it and not complain. And then the Tylies can go see if they can get into actual art schools.

funny how alot of people are mentioning the poor construction of Tyler’s horsies, yet stress how busy they are with finals etc. It seems as though Tyler had the time to whip up something fun and enlightening AND still keep to their “tight curriculum.” look at the big picture and start collaborating. this has potential

To everyone from every philadelphia art school: Relax!
Although I do go to Tyler and have pride in my school (as everyone should) I don’t agree with all of the put downs, and the other schools should know that not all tyler students feel negatively. The horses were not meant to offend or rouse animosity. They were given to the other schools to create a healthy and creative dialogue since we do go to art school and need to keep our creative juices flowing aside from our mandatory homework assignments.
There is no reason for this bickering. We are all going to be colleagues once we graduate regardless of “school rankings”, etc.
Speaking of school rankings, I will agree with the people who said that these do not mean anything when it comes to personal artistic growth. You DO get what you put into school. I went to Moore for a year before transferring to Tyler and I know that I would have gotten an education just as great as the one I am getting from Tyler.
We need to start going to each other’s gallery openings and collaborating while we are still in school and have the school’s studios and other facilities at our fingertips. There shouldn’t be such hostility.
If we have such little time, where do we find time to write angry responses to those who, like i said, will become our colleagues.
Also those saying they have a heavier workload than another school; you do not know this for a fact. None of us have seen the curriculum of every school so there’s no need to be using this against another.
despite all of your busy schedules, i hope that we can keep a peaceful dialogue going and maybe eventually bridge the hostile gap between the art schools in order to grow more as people and artists.

to the angry temple main student:
we have the same core/gen. ed. curriculum as every other major so Temple did put their money into academics by building the new school. tyler students also pay more than most majors which does give us more funding to build a new school.
the reason tyler students did not want to move to main campus is the beautiful campus we had to leave behind at elkins park. if you saw it, you’d understand. calm down, learn some tolerance, and try visiting one of the tyler galleries. it just may be an enlightening experience.

I just saw this in the Temple Review (Fall 09). Brilliant. What fun! I hope that in retrospect this is a healthy rivalry. I went to Tyler for painting, my husband was at VCU for Sculpture, and we met at grad school at Syracuse. We both are making art, have several galleries, and teach, as well. We are not beating each other up over who went to what school. All of our programs were great.

I love this idea. If it helps all of the students think outside of their walls, great.
