We received the unfathomable news that Metro columnist/philly.com video producer Brian Hickey (pictured above), our former colleague here at City Paper, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident Friday in Collingswood. According to his wife, Angela Klem, at approximately 10:15 p.m., he was walking on Atlantic Avenue, likely on his way to the PATCO speedline, when he was struck and left for dead. According to Angie, Brian is in stable condition at the Trauma-ICU of Cooper University Hospital after surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

“They left him for dead and luckily there was one neighbor who heard the screeching of the tires,” Angie told Metro. “The resident saw the car but couldn’t identify it. Maybe if the driver has a conscience he’ll turn himself in.”

According to the Metro article:

He suffered extensive head injuries and remained in the intensive care unit at Cooper Medical Center in Camden as doctors worked to relieve pressure on his brain, his wife said, adding that Hickey's body did react to pain when doctors tested for paralysis.

Angie posted this on his Facebook:

Brian needs your prayers, he was a victim of a hit and run last night at 1015pm in Collingswood NJ. He’s in the Trauma-ICU with a subdural hemotoma and cerebral contusions. Please pray for him. Brian is out of surgery. They performed bilateral decompression. He is in stable condition. They could not find his phone, so I have very little phone numbers to update friends. Please call or email me at 215-888-5538, angela_klem@msn.com. Thank you so much for your well wishes at this horrible time.

If you know Brian, please reach out to his family.

If you have any information about who the driver is, do the right thing and come forward to the police.

Just heard the news. Wish you a speedy recovery, Brian.

Brian - please get better soon! My thoughts and prayers are with you. You did my first news story ever as a Professional Santa way back in 1999 or 2000. You interviewed me at the KOP mall for PW. I still have that article framed and hung up! I wish you the best!! When I heard your name on the news, my heart sunk.

You’ll pull though this with the amount of support and prayers you are receiving!

Best Wishes,
Dutch

I was Brian’s First grade teacher at Strawbridge School in HaddonTownship. He was just as you show his pic now. Full of life with a twinkle in his eye, and i loved having him in class even if he did drive me crazy ever once in a while. When you speak to Brian please convey that I am wishing him a speedy recovery and he is in my prayers. Tell him Mrs Berry and Mrs Pusatere are puling for him also. Take care of yourself Angie. How is Mr. Hickey doing?

CB: We’ve been updating on Brian’s condition throughout this process. Click here to read all the updates. Click here for the most recent, posted Jan. 19. Brian is back home in East Falls. Visited him last weekend and at the time was in generally good spirits but very anxious to have the surgery to replace the pieces of his skull that were removed so he can start doing some more vigorous rehab work.
