The DN… What?

Bookmark and Share

The Democratic National Convention is, of course, in full swing right now. Last night was Hillary. If the PUMAs (Party Unificaton My Ass) - a contingent of apparently unrelentingly pissed-off women who voted Clinton in the primary - were waiting for a sign from their fallen leader to take the place by storm, it never came. Hilary went for Obama big.

I happened to watch that speech from the Abyssinian Ethiopian restaurant, on 45th and Locust in West Philly. There were maybe twenty people watching, pretty much all of them from Ehtiopia. They sat in rapt attention as Clinton spoke, occasionally cheering or murmuring commentary to a neighbor.

"Bullshit!" shouted one woman when Clinton promised universal health care.
"A Woman's right to vote!" she chimed a minute later, cheering now. Clinton had given a nod to American women's achievements. "You go, baby." Health care just wasn't her issue, apparently.

We all watched the speech until it was over, at which point a few patrons began demanding that the Ethiopian music be turned back on. The political chitchat, though, went on.

And here's what I want to say. I had stumbled on the scene by accident, on my way down from the upstairs bar, Fiume - a great neighborhood bar - and also a lot younger, hipper, whiter, and smartsy-fartsy (for lack of a better word) than its Ethiopian counterpart below. Nobody upstairs was talking about the convention.

Indeed, I had been asking people all day what they thought of Michelle the night before, was getting blank looks. And yet on Monday, when I had asked the guy who runs the deli by my house, a West African, if he was following the convention, he asked if Michelle had started yet, looking nervously at his watch. His freakin' watch, he was so on top of that convention.

The DNC is silly, most of the speeches have been awful, and it's hard to blame anyone for skipping the whole affair or catching up via other news sources- but the next time I hear someone ranting about political apathy, the disintegration of American Democracy, or the dreaded topic of immigration - I'll remember who was watching what.

80 percent of the American population are NOT easily going to be swayed, by either Obama, McCain to give the 13 to 20 million illegal aliens any kind of Amnesty.? By any name they want to call it? It has to be voted by house, Senate, and THE PEOPLE and that will have major hurdles, if not impossible?
Everybody who doesn’t have the right papers, know they are intentionally breaking the law. Their is no malice by the agents; just a duty to the American people and those who came here legally.

The ‘Rule of Law” must be observed by every person in the United States. LAUREL, Miss, a manufacturing plant where 600 illegal aliens were arrested this week, shows the abnormality of the problem? The federal agents declined how many agents were involved in the raid, but said they acted on a tip provided by a union worker.

You cannot tell me for one minute, that the CEO, Directors on mahogany row didn’t know about the illegal workers? Ice has a Tipline: 1-866-DHS-2ICE for intelligence to locate illegal aliens, or predatory businesses that employ them. If we can only pass the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) that Democrats are trying to keep away from the public eye.

Its funding will build a massive force of interior ICE agents, including 20.000 border patrol enforcement to root out the culprits and the E-verify data base that is 90.5 percent effective. NUMBERSUSA, CAPSWEB

I heard Michelle and Hillary were both great, but I haven’t gotten a chance to watch them yet. What’s a good bar to watch the Obama speech on Thursday?

Drew, I believe the place to watch the Obama speech on Thursday will be at Independence Mall, Fifth and Market, 8 p.m. I hear there’s some kind of crowd gathering there

there are more than “pissed-off women” in PUMA as far as I can tell. that generalization is unfair. you make it sound like they’re all on their periods or something.

Yeah, I’ve been hearing ads for the Independence Mall thing on the radio. I might go to that. I’d like to watch it in a bar full of drunk people cheering, football-style.
