Kite & Key Tavern opens in Fairmount

Bookmark and Share

How's this for good timing? The day before July 4 and Kite and Key (1836 Callowhill St., 215-568-1818) , a handsome neighborhood pub from Bishop's Collar alums Jim Kirk and Jake Hampson, officially opens its doors. We just swung by to find the place packed with after-work revelers on its first official night in business. No photos, unfortunately (forgot the cam), but they're on the way. Details after the jump.

- Kirk and Hampson acquired the space, formerly Savannah's Soul Food, this past winter. (Kite & Key joins the recently opened King of Tandoor and Sabrina's 2 on this increasingly busy block.) It's done up with dark polished wood and exposed brick for a modern pub feel. A few umbrella'd tables out on the sidewalk; the facade also features windowed bay doors (a la Cantina) that open up onto the street to let the bar area breathe. All in all the spot can accommodate around 150 guests.

- Sixteen beers on tap right now, including Dogfish 60-Minute IPA, Brooklyn Pennant Ale, Yards IPA, Troegs Nut Brown and Victory Prima Pils; bottle list isn't 100 percent rounded out yet, but will grow to feature somewhere between 20 and 30 choices, from local brews to domestic crafts like Acme and Flying Dog. A wine list with by-the-bottle and by-the-glass options is coming, as well.

- Chef is Bill Stroebel, who last cooked at Rembrandt's. Longtime Fairmounters know him from his time at McCrossen's Tavern. The well-priced menu includes gastropubby fare like jerk wings, fish tacos, a shrimp po'boy, a quarter chicken and housemade gnocchi. They're doing "tablecloth food without the tablecloth," as Kirk puts it.

- Kudos to our friend Rick, who we ran into having a pint at a table when we arrived, for pointing this out: Logistics-wise, there are few better places to start your weekend. Hit up happy hour at Kite & Key, then skip directly across the street to Franklin Beer Distributors (1837 Callowhill St.) to stock up for Saturday and Sunday. Cheers to location x 3.

Place is not good. Food is poor and service is worse. Anybody can pour a pint of beer. shame on you guys. Bring back the soul food. They would not let me in because I was black.

I would not recommend dining here. Between the dirty restrooms and the leaking sewer pipe - it leaves alot to be desired.

Wont last long. Who’s next for this place?
