Cheers To You, Woolly Mammoth

| "Hi! Do you have a few minutes to talk about what faith means to you?" |
Cheers To You (430 South St.), which has been getting South Street toasty for the better part of two decades, has a new owner and a new name — Matt Woody reopened the space last week as the Woolly Mammoth. Number's still the same: 215-923-8780.
Woody, a longtime family friend of Cheers owner Richard Tecco, jumped on the deal when Tecco said he wanted to sell. He's freshened up the entire space and installed new plasma-screen TVs. Upstairs still has pool tables. The menu's been updated a bit — roast beef and roast pork, Cajun chicken, 10-ounce "mammoth" Angus beef burgers, calamari, sliders, cheesesteak eggrolls and more. "Basic bar food, but done fresh and done well," he says. Fifteen brews on tap — Yards, Victory and Magic Hat are among the choices right now — with something like 60 to 70 bottled choices.

OK, the name. "Years and years and years ago," says Woody, he was caught off-roading on private property in DelCo. The cops cited him, and his name ended up in the police blotter in the local paper. There — as papers sometimes do — they spelled his name wrong: Matt "Wooly." Naturally, all his buddies started calling him that. Later, in 2001, Woody set up an informal bar in the garage of his house to have friends over for games, and dubbed it the "Woolly Mammoth." Now it's for real. Any major differences? "Maybe now I'll make money instead of lose money," laughs Wooly/Woody.
