10-Track Mind: Carrie and Big, Joaquin and Reese, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Dave and Tim, and everywhere in between

Bookmark and Share

Every week we have a staffer, freelancer or friend-or-enemy of the Clog put their iTunes or iPod on shuffle and tell us about the first 10 songs that come up. The only rules: No skipping, no cheating and you don't need to be all music-critic-y about it. If you'd like to submit a 10-track mind of your own, contact Brian Howard at bhoward (at) citypaper (dot) net. This week CP intern extraordinaire Aly Semigran digs through the digital crates.

1.) Mc Solaar, "La Belle et Le Bad Boy" I don't have many girlie girl vices, I hate shopping and I don't find Orlando Bloom particularly dreamy, but I adore Sex and the City. This French rap piece was in the series finale mere moments before Carrie and Big cross paths in Paris. C'est magnifique!

2.) The Talking Heads, "Psycho Killer" Hey, more French! "Psycho killer, Que'st que c'est?"

3.) M. Ward, "Chinese Translation" I came across this song randomly on WXPN one afternoon (it's where I find many gems) and it stuck with me. Besides, who can't relate to the question: "What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart?"

4.) Coldplay, "Fix You" Coldplay is the kind of music reserved for rainy days. You're bummed out all alone at home. No one is going to remedy that besides Chris Martin and gang. Damn you, Gwenyth! This also happens to be one of the few standouts off X and Y.

5.) Rodrigo Y Gabriela, "Diablo Rojo" I was introduced to them when they played on Letterman and I can say with all honesty it was one of the few times I've been absolutely blown away by musicians. I watched with my jaw agape and it didn't close until long after the performance. I bought the album immediately.

6.) Mika, "Love Today" Glam pop at its absolute finest and the guy's voice is eerily reminiscent of Freddie Mercury's.

7.) Basement Jaxx feat. Lisa Kekaula, "Good Luck" You can keep your "I Will Survive" and your "You Oughta Know." This is the most badass break-up-and-he'll-regret-this-forever song ever.

8.) Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, "Jackson" Actors-turned-musicians is a really tricky maneuver, not to mention emulating the GREAT Johnny Cash, but Joaquin managed to pull it off. And really well at that. Walk the Line was as good as biopics come and the soundtrack was equally excellent.

9.) Michael Franti and Spearhead, "Light Up Ya Lighter" Exactly what we need more of: anti-war protest songs. Michael Franti and crew are filling the RATM void, in a slightly friendlier way.

10.) Dave Matthews Band and Tim Reynolds, "Halloween" Ah, all-knowing iPod saved the best for last. I am obsessed, no, I mean OBSESSED, with Dave Matthews, and to my ears Live at Luther College is pretty close to perfection. I'm always surprised when people tell me they think of Dave as just this happy hippie dude. He can write some pretty haunting songs. "Halloween" might just be the best example of that.
