When we sent Running Numbers wiz/closet table tennis junkie Nick Norlen to surreptitiously try out for the U.S. Olympic ping pong team, we had no idea he would become a media sensation. Though we'll bring you Nick's account of his bid to make the team in these pages in a couple of weeks, we present to you the coverage that prompted Nick to write us this morning with the line "Now I know how McNabb feels":
Then his shots went haywire like a reveler spraying a champagne bottle of pingpong balls. Nolan (sic) smacked one shot so wide into the netting that separated the playing and practice courts it looked like Mike Vanderjagt's playoff field goal attempt against Pittsburgh in 2006.
Sayeth Norlen:
I'm holding a press conference at 3 to announce my retirement from competitive play.
