When
Devendra Banhart plays The Fillmore at the TLA in anticipation of
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon's release, a funny thing'll happen right before it.
Fishtown's
Margie Wienk and
James Ayre of
Fern Knight will get married in Fishtown. No. We don't need to bring up the "freak folk" thing. It's tired. But there are certainly lots of psychedelic connections between Banhart and Fern Knight beyond music, maaaan.
Banhart and the lot that make up
Espers are friends and Espers'
Greg Weeks produces Fern Knight. Photographer and Vetiver cellist
Alissa Anderson who happens to be accompanying Banhart on his tour will take their wedding photos.
Andy Cabric of Vetiver plays in Banhart's band.
New Hope, PA, publicist
Howard Wuelfing not only represents Banhart (he also happens to be a spiritual advisor of sorts to Devendra) but Fern Knight, Espers,
Orion Rigel Dommisse (from Greg's label Language of Stone) too.
They were all (save Banhart) at a North Bowl bachelor party for Ayre and Wienk along with members of
Golden Ball and
Woodwose and will all be at the Doylestown wedding that afternoon.
Before I can ask what Banhart bought the couple — maybe some really nice sage sticks, designer hair ties — he giggles. "We haven't been invited." Pause. "We know about the wedding, but..." His voice trailed off.
Now of course Fern Knight's couple knows he's been on tour and know that Banhart's sound-check probably hits about the same time as their "I Dos".
"But we're excited to see Howard and Amy (Wuelfing's wife) and hang with the Espers guys." As they might too be at the wedding, this might be weird. "Maybe I'll check my email again."
Margie and James?
Dev's a tiny guy. He won't eat much. INVITE HIM. Maybe he'll sing the new Jamaican Jewish wedding song (
"Shabop Shalom") from his new CD that'll make you plotz it's so fine and funny.
