Philly Madness: Pardon the Interruption

Dear Philly Madness enthusiasts:
You may have noticed that the voting for Philly Madness has been inactive for the last hour or so. We've taken the poll offline momentarily to iron out some problems we've been having with the voting. You see, the Philly Madness site was attacked by a nefarious voting "bot," aka a program rigged to spam the system. While, as stated in the rules, we have no problem with people voting as often as they like, we do have a problem with bots (which anyone who's seen the Matrix should). So once the site's back live, you can continue voting as often as you like — risking life, limb and carpal tunnel — but you can't set up a bot to rig the polls for your guy. We can tell if you do. And will delete your votes. Like, if, say, we receive four votes per second over hours and hours from the same IP address? Um, yeah, we know you're a bot. You may want your guy to win, but, y'know, let's do it fair-like.
Also, to make up for this downtime, we're extending the voting till midnight MONDAY. We cool?

Look people, if you're gonna continue to spam the system — and i'm talking to both sides here — I'm gonna turn this car around and tan yr' hides, alright? Like, seriously, we've caught several 'bots in the last couple hours and will be deleting their votes shortly. Let's not turn this into a Flordia 2000/Ohio 2004 situation, a'ight? We know who you are and we know what you're up to.

The Mummers are great! But for alot of us only one day a year, Pierre is part of our lives almost every day of the year live! He brings Kindness, Love, Compassion, and Kool! He raises awarness and donates time for a long list of causes,Human,Plant ,animal and environmental! All this while Rockin out! Not too bad for a long Haired Hippy type D.J. And his Dog.
Well, since it appears the votes have been compromised, I think the only fair thing is to reset all the votes like Milton Rose mentioned. Otherwise, how can you believe the actual results? Would mean that this whole contest is a farce.
Well it seems to me that people have their convoluted thoughts on the mummers and their impact on the community. Thing is we don’t have a medium to advertise our good deeds and why would we want to? We are not doing it for the publicity. That separates us from Mr. Robert. There was a campaign started back in February for The Ventnor City mail carrier Maureen DePrince called Mummers for Maureen to be at the ready to assist in meeting her needs when and if a new house is awarded to her or we are called on to donate time. Every Mummer has volunteered to give their time and talents in their respective trades to help build a new house when the time comes. This is not the only project we are tackling in our own communities, believe me. Why would we use bots? It seems the guilty party received 25,000 votes in one hour so what does Mr. Robert have to say about that one. A close party to the radio station already informed us he has set up bots and had his interns dedicating their time to vote all day when they are there.
The City Paper does not want the Mummers to win anyway. The radio station will give them publicity where the Mummers can not and the media relationship is tainted. So why not hand the prize over to Mr. Robert now? It has already been tainted and was allowed to continue during the down time.

This whole contest is rigged. I kept voting and now I can’t even access the site. I was even willing to risk carpal tunnel. How are you supposed to support your party when you aren’t allowed to vote?

It is clear that the Pierre camp still is cheating - you can see their votes go up by about 10-15 every 10 seconds or less. Sorry WMMR…I grew up with Pierre too but the Mummers have been around in this city for over 100 years and will be here after Pierre retires.
I gotta say, I don’t quite get the Mummers. I mean, I dig the string bands, the fancys, the comics, the strut. It’s all cool, in it’s way. The problem I have is that Mummers sometimes look like clowns and clowns, as everybody knows, are evil. I don’t know why they’re evil, no one does, but there’s just something nefarious about clowns. I’m not saying that Mummers are evil, or even that they’re clowns, I’m just saying that they look a little too much like clowns and therefore must be remotely related to clowns and that automatically rules them out. I still can’t believe that the Mummers beat the Phillie Phanatic. If they manage to beat a good citizen like Pierre, it will not be a good day in the morning.
It’s really unbelievable how some people have no clue as to what we (mummers) do all year round. The Mummers are more than just a one day spectacle. We do things for the community and for people at a loss. Unfortunately, the city does not see a lot of this and continues to pawn us off as a bunch of drunk criminals. What a shame!

This goes out to Mike (4/20 7:56am) who is obviously a sore loser, and the Mummers haven’t even lost, nor has Pierre Robert won either. I agree with you that the Mummers do alot of the city and the community. I do watch them every year on TV, and my favorites are the fancy brigades, but I also like the CLEAN fun that Pierre Robert has on his daily radio show. Oh and Mike, I don’t know WHO you got your information from but Pierre and his interns would NEVER EVER cheat in this contest. Pierre is a “good citizen” through and through. He does MANY good deeds for this city and for that he has been HONORED by the City of Philadelphia not once, but TWICE. Why don’t you listen to him once in a while and see where I’m coming from. Also, as for the publicity aspect of your rant, The Mummers made it this far in the competition, so stop your bitchin’.

I honestly do not believe the interns sit there all day and vote…come on. I’m sure it isn’t the most stressful job but there has to be more to it than that. Why isn’t it believable that listeners could go on at once and vote mupliple times? The other DJ’s do promote the contest. It is good for Pierre, it is good for the station, it is good for the paper AND it is even good for the mummers. Just start over and Piere will still win.
I’ll admit, I’ve been voting all morning so, yea, I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw 10-15 votes per minute if even a 10 listeners were voting. Like the one dude said, vote, submit, back, repeat. I hope they don’t think I’m a bot!
Mummers are fine musicians and I hear they do a lot for their communities but they don’t really touch my life very much. I grew up with Pierre and he reaches out to so many in the community in so many ways. What a terrific Philadelphia icon! VOTE PIERRE … whenever we can vote again!

I love the Mummers and as far as I am concerned this is about who best repesents Philly, I dont think it should be a single person of anykind to get this title how can one person have that honor? the mummers are made up of thousands of people and have been here for along time. also they are nowhere else but Philly so this is why I think they should win. I also agree the votes have been tainted and should be reset.
Coming from soneone who’s got alittle bit of “inside” on mummery - they’re great, they work very, very hard all year long and they love what they do. Now, coming from me again, who is an avid Pierre fan… Well, there’s no comparison - sorry mums - Pierre all the way!!

I’m taking this opportunity to apologize to the Mummers. I love the Mummer and always have since coming here to Philadelphia.
I encourage all my listeners to VOTE as often as permitted for this group of great individuals to represent our city regardless of what it does or does not do for notoriety. The Mummers are a fixture in this town and a 100 plus year tradition that should not go unacknowledged or cast aside.
As one person stated, they were here well before I was and will be when I leave.

What has Pierre done for the community? I haven’t heardhis name in years until this forum. What are his ratings in the morning according to arbitron? And I call em like I see em. The reason the mummers are going to lose this vote is because their leaders are not responsive to the rank and file members. A lot of mummers are voting for Pierre Robert because he is Fred Calandra’s great nephew too.

Yes Pat, Mummers care about mummers. You took how long to figure that out? Ok, Here’s a clue … Ever hear about The Mummer’s wave of Relief? The Mummers Ride for the Cure? Mummers Food Drive? Yes, Mummers only care about Mummers.
Hosting an open house on Broad Street every year, I know first hand how disappointing this parade is to my guests. Mummers walking up the street, not playing, only performing in certain spots for certain people. Awful… I’ll never forget the year that they all rode in busses to the judges stand. unforgiveable! Then they moved their route thinking more people would attend! They just don’t get it…if they performed for the people, the people would come! By the way, when you see that Mummers play at certain fundraisers, remember that they were PAID to be there.
Pierre, however is an every day staple in our lives. He’s a good man who spreads peace and love in this city of ours…EVERY DAY. He is involved in many things to make Philly a better place for us all. My vote goes to Pierre.
i talked to Pierre Off air and told him he was winning last week against the cheesestake and he might win the whole thing and he told he didn’t want to win and he shouldn’t have made it this far, so why would he have his interns waste their time voting for him? He does not care about who wins the contest he cares about things like Public television, bringing water to construction workers on 90 degree plus days, re-uniteing families during the holidays, and world peace, and would not waste the time or energy to fix a trivial popularity contest.
my question is “Why should anyone care about bots anyway when the contest itself promoted multiple votes?” now that there is a serious war between 2 contestants its a problem i say ignore it and let the most deticated cheaters win as they have throught the entire contest OR reset the voting and limit votes to 1 per IP address.
What’s the big deal? I’ve been listening to Pierre almost as long as I’ve been a mummer. Both should be proud to have made it this far, we were both put up against some solid Philly Icons and have surrvived.
Pierre and the Mummers are both assets to the city of Philadelphia, both unique in there own way and both very active in their respective communities.
Why not get both parties together and do something constructive for the city or a charity, the only thing that this bickering is doing is tarnishing both parties. I’ll listen to Pierre on Monday as I always do and watch the Mummers perform every Thursday at the Mummers Museum.

I am sure that the staff at City Paper can easily see that on Friday, Pierre went up about 7,000 votes in maybe about an hour or so. I cannot see anything since the votes were adjusted to show that the Mummers votes are out of whack. Oh well, I still love the Mummers.
nys day host: we perform where the CITY ALLOWS US TO PERFORM!!! we have city workers assigned to us moving us up the street from start to finish, and if they say move, YOU MOVE, whether there are 300 people standing on the corner or not. if they say stop, we stop and play. the city regulates the parade, the city provides extra police officers, the city puts the bleachers and barricades up, the city blocks off the street, so the city gets to decide where we perform and WHEN-bet you didnt know we have to follow a time schedule for performance areas didya? the city does not want to go back to the days of parades that dont end til 8 pm. please complain to: THE CITY.

This is definitely suspect. If City Paper doesn’t find a bot was voting for the Mummers last night then they will lose their credibility.
The mums have over 800 members on our message board. We simply told everyone to be ready leading up to midnight. Why do you think Pierre would pull ahead during the day, and we would catch up at night. And besides, why was it that after the Bot votes were thrown out, we ended up with few thousand vote lead.

bullshi# at 11:59 sunday night (when the voting was supposed to end) pierre was in the lead by 4000 votes, the mummers took the lead early monday morning when the voting was supposed to be over.
