Killing off the soft swill of WJJZ  FM — they called it jazz; that was not jazz — when Clear Channel shut off 106.1 FM along with Sunny 104 FM this morning could not stop the terrorizingly banal from occuring. For though the wretched cast of cottony gushy jocks what rippled below the dull moans of Dave Koz is still not as awful as:

Whoopi Goldberg’s “Wake up with Whoopi” Morning Show Debuts on the New - Philly’s 106.1 FM

The Award-Winning Actress & Comedian Will Provide a Lively Mix of Music, Comedy, Daily Topics & Guests

Philadelphia, PA August 10, 2006: (Clear Channel Philadelphia) On Monday August 14, 2006 something wonderful comes to morning radio when Whoopi Goldberg’s “Wake up with Whoopi” debuts on Clear Channel Radio Philadelphia’s new Philly’s 106.1106.1 FM. “Wake Up with Whoopi” – is live weekday mornings from 5:00 – 9:00 AM - blending Whoopi’s comedy with daily topics, listener call-ins, guests and music. There aren’t many women helming their own major market morning show. Whoopi says, “I’m thrilled to add my name to that small list because I believe that we have something to add to the morning groove.” Don’t expect another shock jock. According to Whoopi, “I don’t want to put anyone down or talk mean about people. I think I’ll have a different approach and there’s a lot of interesting stuff to talk about.” Clear Channel Regional Vice President Manuel Rodriguez says, “Whoopi Goldberg is a superstar, mother and grandmother. She’s the real deal and not a phony. She is a woman who understands a woman’s life. She is a unique and compelling voice in the morning.” Philly’s 106.1 Program Director Brian Check says, “There’s been a real void for women listening to morning radio. ‘Wake up with Whoopi’ welcomes women back to morning radio by giving them a show they can relate to with a familiar, popular entertainer.” Check says, “Wake up with Whoopi will be up-beat, lively, hysterically funny, and family friendly.”

Whoopi Goldberg has set her sights on conquering radio and it’s not a stretch to predict great things. Whoopi has excelled in virtually every area of entertainment throughout a uniquely diverse career earning her enormous popularity and global recognition. She is one of a very elite group of artists to win the Grammy (“Whoopi Goldberg,” 1985), the Academy Award (“Ghost,” 1991), the Golden Globe (“The Color Purple,” 1985 and “Ghost,” 1991), the Emmy (as host of AMC’s “Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel,” 2002) and the Tony (as producer of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” 2002). She has also earned multiple People’s Choice Awards, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and NAACP Image Awards, among many other awards and honors. Whoopi is equally well-known for her humanitarian and charitable contributions to causes and organizations ranging from education and literacy to substance abuse, women’s and children’s health and welfare and the battle against HIV and AIDS. I never did like 106.1 calling itself “Smooth Jazz.” That wasn’t jazz by any stretch of the word. However, if I were ever in the mood for some R&B station that played THE EXACT FREAKING PLAYLIST EVERY DAY that would have been my station.

You want jazz, you turn to Temple radio. They’re still playing jazz, right?

I hope they bring alternative rock back to Philly. Man, I miss them station!

Man, I miss them stations!!!

With an S this time. No dropping the S for savings.

[...] As it turns out, she’s just a bitch because WJJZ was taken down yesterday, along with Sunny 104.5 on our FM dials. [...]

Clear Channel is (clearly) making some obvious choices with some recent cancellations and station eliminations!! First their was Rush Limbaugh, who provided the TRUTH versus the PARTIAL FACTS and out & out LIES from other radio, TV and the Print Media!! Now he is GONE?? Then there is the two channels in Philly whose democraphics was not of the extremeists of the left!! Now Clear Channel has chosen sides, and the onslaught of lies has won out! This whoopi person was elevated to supreme left popularity during the last elections with her bashing and referrals to body areas. To date NO extreme left radio or TV program has EVER LASTED, because listeners and readers understood what these people were putting out was of NO USE to intelligent, common sense, free thinking individuals. How unfortunate that Clear Channel has turned toward the setting sun of those extreme people!! Well, as for me, it has been said over and over again. If you do not like something, JUST TURN IT OFF!!! So shall it be to ALL of Clear Channels programs on radio, tv or the print media. At least the laughable print media has a purpose, I use it UNDER MY PARROTS CAGE, to catch additional droppings that she puts out along with Clear Channel!! TURN ON YOUR BRAINS, TUNE OUT CLEAR CHANNEL IN ALL FORMATS AND TURN TO THE TRUTH ON OTHER STATIONS!! There are other JAZZ CHANNELS, maybe not as good but with our input they can be!! Toodles from a long time listener of COOL JAZZ 106.1 FM!! Thanks to ALL the STAFF!! I will listen for ya on the airwaves!!

I am very disappointed that WJJZ has been taken off the air…

I am very disappointed! I listened to WJJZ every night before going to sleep and I won’t listen to that station now. It’s too loud and obnoxious.

I’m very disappointed. It was the only station that, although they did play the same songs over and over again, at least they could be played in a public place without worry about offending someone with the lyrics or a potty mouthed DJ. Now we can only listen to approved CD’s.

Jim, Howard Stern has “lasted” for 20 years. I’m not a huge fan, but i’d say he falls a wee bit to the left with his politics. Maybe if you weren’t so busy memorizing Rush-isms, you’d know that.

I think Whoopi is doing a great job, I listen every morning. I also like the music–old dance music is my favorite!! Cubby, you are awesome too!
