A mollusk scientist at the Academy hits the jackpot.
Few summertime shell collectors pause to consider
the briny creatures that once lived inside — unless they're hungry. But
that could change, thanks to new research, done in part by the Academy
of Natural Sciences here in Philly, which points to these ocean
denizens as sources of new drugs and fuels.

Philly researchers make fish milkshakes for science.
They're studying contaminant levels in fish. But fish don't tend to volunteer for these tests. To corral their subjects, they shock the fish with electricity,
collect them and then pop them in a blender. They test the resulting
fish mush for harmful chemicals.

The new WPEB will feature community
news, public affairs, music and talk, all recorded and produced by
volunteer residents. It is a rare moment for
community media, and Philadelphia media in general, as it is next to
impossible to start any kind of new FM station in a huge urban market
like Philly, much less a nonprofit community one.
