After Matthew Morgan and James Spooner released the 2003 film Afro-Punk, a documentary about black punks in America, the pair decided to create a living, breathing event spotlighting the Afro-punk lifestyle. In 2005, the Afro-Punk Fest debuted at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. This music/literature/sometimes sports tour, which promotes a more diverse interpretation of the word "punk," is touching down in Philly for the first time ever. Local neo-soul bands Black Landlord and West Vienna will perform, along with Houston pop group American Fangs and author Saul Williams. Morgan hopes the event will show people that skin color doesn't have to dictate personal taste. "If I can make one black kid at every stop step outside of feeling restricted by a genre of music," he says, "I would be really happy."
