Lady Sovereign doesn't exactly have the best track record here in Philly. You may recall a certain notorious meltdown/near-riot at the pre-remodel Silk City. In fact, she's had a pretty rough time of things in general. She was once hailed as the great white hope for U.K. rap, but her charismatic, electro-spiked debut failed to truly blow up at home or in the States (a No. 1 video on TRL notwithstanding). She was subsequently dropped by both of her labels, and she's all but disappeared from view since 2006. But now Lady Sov is back — sans her trademark side-ponytail — picking up the pieces, manhandling guitars, sampling The Cure and evoking a Eurodance Enya (check "Student Union") on the scattered but spunky Jigsaw, released via her own Midget records. Whereas fellow bratty-Brit Lily Allen feels compelled to doll up her snark by being cutesy and coy, Sov's just an unabashedly cheeky braggart. And we love her for it. Right, Philly?
