Green with Fashion
Wed., April 22, 7 p.m., $20 pre-sale only, F.U.E.L. Collection, 249 Arch St., greenwithfashion.t83.net.

We define the word "fashion" in many ways. According to Merriam-Webster, regarding "dress," it is "a prevailing custom, usage or style." A synonym for fashion is "mode," which "suggests the fashion of the moment for those who are anxious to appear elegant and sophisticated." This hot-today, gone-tomorrow mindset in the fashion world is currently being challenged by individuals and companies seeking to "green" the industry in various ways: by advocating for fair working conditions, using organic cotton, recycled fibers and low-impact production techniques, and making clothing in classic styles so it lasts many seasons.

One such challenger is Drexel senior Jenni Izzo, who will exhibit ecologically responsible apparel at her Green With Fashion event April 22. The corporate and public relations major has organized a show featuring local clothiers (Arcadia Boutique, Nicole Rae Styer, Three Sirens, Viv Pickle, Vintage Blue) as well as nationally known designers like Loomstate and Simple Shoes. Student designers from Drexel will also unveil their ecologically friendly lines of sportswear at the show, which seeks to prove that apparel that's good for the Earth can also be good for your style.

"Green clothing is perceived as dull and boring. It doesn't have to be hemp, or earthy tones and muted colors," Izzo says. "If people didn't know this was an eco-fashion show, they would have no idea."

Izzo is increasing her powers of goodwill by donating all proceeds from the $20 presale-only tickets to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Gretchen Rossi, an enthusiastic activist for the LLS who also happens to star in The Real Housewives of Orange County, will walk in the show as a model. Also lending their modeling talents will be five former Miss Philadelphias.

A variety of sponsors are donating food, beverages and services to Izzo's efforts. Guests will be treated to bites from Whole Foods Market, M Catering and DJjay's Catering, and sips of Rain Organic Vodka, Domaine de Canton and Red Bull. The Carbon Fund will donate five tons' worth of carbon offsets to make the event, and all who attend, carbon neutral for the day. Decrease your footprint further by riding a bike there in vintage clothing — it's on Earth Day, after all.
