No one would argue that dance is the most direct way to communicate a message, but in Zornitsa Stoyanova's work even the most concrete ideas get muddied and abstracted. Last year, Point of No Return used audience-drawn maps to lead dancers through a choreography of confusion. Her new work, which she'll première at "Fresh Juice," Mascher Space Co-op's biannual artist-in-residence show, reduces language itself to gibberish. This new piece grew out of a workshop in which Stoyanova developed a character she describes as schizophrenic, subject to sudden shifts in mood, responding to nonexistent stimuli. The Bulgarian-born, Philly-based dancer-choreographer is out to explore dark concepts in a lighthearted fashion. The piece will be scored by percussionist Toshi Makihara, whose own unique movements will be incorporated onstage.
