EXPERIMENTAL

Despite the title that Bowerbird has lent to this evening of solo performances, there's likely to be little here that would translate to the video game arena. The four guitarists on the bill are all, in one way or another, the spiritual progeny of John Fahey, incorporating to varying degrees intricate folk melodies, raga-inspired patterns and dark, textured drones. David Daniell leans toward minimal compositions built from layers of resonant tones and deconstructed Americana; former Pelt guitarist Jack Rose relocates the straight razor in the hands of the blues, following the wrong fork of that legendary crossroads for all the right reasons. Glenn Jones, leader of Boston-based avant-garage band Cul de Sac, is perhaps the most Fahey-influenced of the bunch, offering tense slide-guitar ruminations and finger-picked balladry with a raw, homespun edge; and Philly's Andy Giles draws on the work of modern composers and noise artists with disturbingly evocative prepared-axe experiments.
