I was once told to shave my fu-manchu because it hid my smile — a no-no-in the biz [Cover Story, "Secret 'Stache," Shaun Brady, Nov. 20, 2008]. John [Oates] and I worked together for years. I miss him. He's the guy who has held H&O together all theses years — "makes the glue stick"!!

Every century brings its heroes and its villains. Every now and then, however, a character lurches forth with a combination of the two; maybe because the world doesn't know whether to love or hate him, he becomes a milestone in the study of complex mankind. Nitty, gritty, but with the spirit of a conquering warrior. In short, a legend is born.
Such a landmark is John Oates.
And be forewarned: He will fucking kill you.

I think you started out with the right idea [Slant, Ryan Godfrey, "Ballots and Stones," Nov. 20, 2008]. Perhaps the tax exempt thing isn't going anywhere, but the reason I'm so upset with them is because of the massive financial and manpower backing of a campaign of lies and dishonesty. And because their efforts on this were so out of proportion to the 2 percent membership in California.
It's very clear if you look at the poll numbers before the election that the lies and deception of the campaign turned the tide for them on this. Responsibility falls squarely on those who funded and spread the messages, not those who voted.
I resigned my church membership a week ago over this. I'm also gay.

I'm curious about the "campaign of lies and dishonesty." What propagated by the [Latter-Day Saints] Church was not truthful? I can think of a slanderous commercial aired by the NO campaign that featured LDS missionaries ransacking a lesbian couple's house and tearing up their marriage license.

If you think the Church was caught off guard, think again. Everyone active in the Church was well aware of the consequences. I didn't hear warnings that it would involve small private family-owned business. But backlash is backlash. LDS were prepared for the violence and nastiness they experienced while on and off duty.

Why all the fuss? This is common all over the country [News, "Crime and Crime Again," Isaiah Thompson, Nov. 20, 2008]. Until we grow some balls and put punks away for what they've done and not give them another chance because they are doing it for the first time or because their daddy didn't tell them bedtime stories about morality, this will continue. Try the act, not the person. (Anyone wanna put money on the fact that these cowards have a criminal record?)

Awesome article, David, love your posts [Slant, David Faris, "Barack the Machine-Slayer," Nov. 13, 2008]. I want to add something this time: Don't forget North Carolina and Ohio and Iowa and the other wildcard states that trumped the Republican's Amber Alert machine. Credit where it's due, and all that. And just as it gave you deep satisfaction when Pennsylvania went for Obama, it gave us red state-dwellers unmitigated bliss to know that although our states would never tilt blue, great numbers of us actively campaigned, day and night, week after week after month after year in border states that DID go for Obama, and, all together, with you guys in Philly and everywhere else, wow, WE DID IT!!! Wa-Hoo!
