Full Moon Beer Dinner at Monk's
Tue., Oct. 14, 7-10 p.m., $60

Monk's co-owner Tom Peters has been souring Avery's Mephistopheles Stout (16 percent ABV) for more than a year in anticipation of, uh, drinking it. "Big-ass beers" will headline this night, from Dogfish Head's Raison d'Extra (18 percent — more hops, more raisons!) and a 2006 batch of Tröegs' Mad Elf, an 11 percent ABV seasonal that Peters refers to as "light." Seven food courses are planned, including scallop and shrimp ceviche and braised lamb shank. Monk's Café, 264 S. 16th St., 215-545-7005, monkscafe.com.

Vegan Benefit Dinner for Wooden Shoe Books
Fri., Oct. 17, 7 p.m., $20

Indulge in a all-you-can-eat fake meat spread at Singapore while a bevy of government-hating radicals let you in on the secrets of the Wooden Shoe's success. (They've been open for more than 30 years!) Discuss the works of Philly's Noam Chomsky over veggie-packed wonton soup or pair a little Howard Zinn with seitan, koniaku and yam "shrimp" with tofu skin. Singapore Chinese Vegetarian, 1006 Race St., 215-922-3288, woodenshoebooks.org.

Lavazza Night
Mon., Oct. 13, 4-10 p.m.

The pros from Italy's Lavazza Coffee want to school you on correct coffee measurements, water pressure, steaming temps and everything else required to make proper espresso. This event is free for the public as well as for professionals, although reservations are required (e-mail rimcafe@rimcafe.com). Rim Café, 1172 S. Ninth St., 215-465-3515, rimcafe.com.

Wissahickon Charter School Benefit

The Trolley Car Diner is setting aside a week to help raise money for Wissahickon Charter School. Drop by with a coupon Monday though Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or over the weekend from 3 to 9 p.m.: The diner will donate 10 percent of all bills collected during these hours to WCS, and owner Ken Weinstein will personally match all contributions.
