Pub & Kitchen, 1946 Lombard St., 215-545-0350, thepubandkitchen.com

Dan Clark, Ed Hackett and Jonathan McDonald quietly soft-opened the handsome P&K in the former Chaucer's last weekend (a few final construction touches are on the to-do list before they turn it up loud). The dark-wood-laden space, which now features lots of natural light thanks to a series of rustic windows, is the proper framework for McDonald's English pub menu. He's got standbys like bangers and mash, fish and chips and mussels done up in curry, leeks and beer, but also pokes into more upscale territory with mains like striped bass with apples, fennel and endive salad. Between 10 and 12 brews on tap at any time — they're currently pouring Brooklyn Lager, Humboldt IPA and Stone Pale Ale. Wine list tops out at $45, with Australia's Yard Dog (red and white, $7/$30) as the house vino. For more pics and the full menu, visit The Clog.

Cream and Sugar, 4004 Spruce St., 215-243-9979

Open since Aug. 11, Blythe Dim's combo coffee counter and sweet shop is so very Philly. That means everything, she says, is made in-house, crafted off-site locally or sourced from Philly purveyors: La Colombe coffee and espresso, Bassett's ice cream, baked goods, cookies, cheesecakes, caramel-dipped apples, chocolate-covered popcorn and more. We can't stop thinking about Cream and Sugar's fresh-made bagel schmears, which include strawberry and honey walnut cream cheeses and "banana split" butter, with bananas and maraschino cherries. They're open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Home Slice, Liberties Walk, 1030 N. American St., 215-627-2726, homeslicepizzeria.blogspot.com

Shannon Dougherty and Liz Petersen are in their first month with Home Slice, a casual pizza parlor in the Liberties Walk space right across from their A Full Plate Café. Pie is available whole or by the slice, with gourmet toppings like jerk chicken, Feta cheese, turkey sausage and asparagus in addition to specialty stuff like Thai curry and spaghetti (!); menu rounds out with "Stupid Hot" wings, burgers, salads and both regular and veggie cheesesteaks (with vegan Wiz!). They're open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday, noon to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, noon to midnight.
