Parsons Dance Co.

Presenting works created from 1987 through 2008, this show is a mini-tour of the company's many styles. Its namesake choreographer is one of contemporary dance's more accessible and visceral dancemakers, and the corps is perennially top-of-the-line.

Oct. 16-18, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900, annenbergcenter.org.

ContempraDance Theatre

Contempra hosts two evenings at the Painted Bride: The first highlights assorted area-based ensembles including Brandywine Ballet, Tara Madson and Tapography Dancers; the second showcases original works by CDT artistic director Gail Vartanian.

Oct. 17-18, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 610-225-3007, contempradancetheatre.org.

Inbal Pinto Dance Co.

Among the most anticipated performances of the fall dance season, Israeli-based Inbal Pinto Co. presents Shaker, inspired by snow globes. It's a surreal, effervescent, ultra-visual dance/music/theater collage that's both beautiful and absurd.

Oct. 29, Annenberg Center.

Balanchine & Tharp

Balanchine delights with Ballo della Regina, featuring many-patterned variations and spirited ballerina stylings. The showstopper of the Pennsylvania Ballet's season opener, however, is likely the joyful and comedic Push Comes to Shove, a seminal work by Twyla Tharp.

Oct. 29-Nov. 2, Academy of Music, 240 S. Broad St., 215-893-1955, paballet.org.

Rubberbandance Group

For its prior Philly outing, Rubberbandance presented a pastiche of works featuring the ensemble's distinct hybrid of hip-hop, contemporary dance and ballet where bravado and elegance receive equal time. Now comes the full-length Phase II, where those same dance elements — plus AV feeds — are employed to examine issues instigated by reality TV, celebrity and surveillance.

Nov. 6-8, Annenberg Center.

La La La Human Steps

This top-tier Canadian company performs Amjad, a fantastical deconstruction of Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, replete with abstract versions of the famous musical scores, giant screen projections, plus intricate, multifaceted choreography.

Nov. 6-8, Kimmel Center.

Edgeworks Dance Theater

The all-male Edgeworks stages The Determining Factor, where dance and social narrative explore issues relating to gender, race and spirituality.

Nov. 21-22, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914, paintedbride.org.

Doug Varone and Dancers

A choreographer's choreographer, Varone is revered as a master of building and dissolving dance structures large and small. A full presentation of his work generally traverses many emotions, not the least of which is passion.

Dec. 4-6, Annenberg Center.

Koresh Dance Co.

Koresh presents a doubleheader: Program A features Theater of Public Secrets, an imaginative theatrical probing of the complexity of private lives, while Program B offers selections from the vast KDC repertory.

Dec. 4-7, Suzanne Roberts Theater, 480 S. Broad St., 215-751-0959, koreshdance.org.

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker

A doll comes to life; mouse battles, waltzing snowflakes and sugar-plum fairies ensue. Performed by Pennsylvania Ballet.

Dec. 12-31, Academy of Music.

Philly-Nutt-Crak-Up

ContempraDance Theatre's annual spoof of the aforementioned holiday favorite combines comedy, hip-hop, jazz and modern dance, along with many references to the City of Brotherly Love.

Dec. 12-14, Painted Bride Art Center.
