I'd like to commend the City Paper for doing the kind of neighborhood story that both The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Daily News just about eschew these days. I'm talking about Tami Fertig's exhaustive, comprehensive report on the city's assorted farmers markets. Such stories make Philly seem much closer as a community. We have a terrific farmers market in Haddonfield where my family lives — one of many in South Jersey. I'm looking forward to the day when City Paper explores some of the fruit-and-produce venues outside the city. Thanks for listening. Keep up the great work!

While I think your comment "Retired military brass, most of whom maintain hidden-to-viewers business relationships with defense contractors" is an unfair blanket statement [Slant, "Slam Bunting," Nathaniel Popkin, May 8, 2008], you make a good point about the paranoia that trickles down from the Pentagon to the very mundane facets of our everyday lives. I wish the jokers at Independence Mall would get the memo about the bunting and bike stands. Beyond the paranoia though, I think people have a morbid fascination with the possibility of terrorism. Seeing these "precautions" makes Philadelphians and those in charge feel like we're just as important as the big boys. Americans have been bred to crave this constant fear since the Cold War, the constant excitement — sick as it may be — that something might happen at any moment, anywhere, even in Philadelphia.

Hummus is Arabic. Israel is trying to steal Arabic food [Cover Story, "Desert Harvest," Pervaiz Shallwani, May 1, 2008] and claim it as their own, just like they are stealing Palestine.

City Paper responds: Cy, thanks so much for your attentive reading of the article. Especially the part about how chef Michael Solomonov's idea of Israeli cuisine incorporates elements of all cultures living in Israel. But hey, I guess when you've got an agenda to promote, you can't sweat the details.
Back in the day, as cops we didn't have EMS [News, "Heart of the Problem," Mike Newall, Nov. 15, 2007]. If a cop came upon an injured person, either a wagon or a car could have you at a hospital within three minutes. Now I see cops standin' around waitin' fer an EMS unit to arrive. If I need emergency treatment, it's, "Officer, strap my ass on the hood o' yer patrol car and get me to a hospital!"
