Call it an homage to their ancestors. For the final night of their April residency at the Khyber, Philly band Greyhounds will open for themselves with a set covering fellow record-shop eclecticists Guided by Voices. Greyhounds frontman Daniel Ralston told us over e-mail that he's inspired by the way Robert Pollard is able to draw power from simplicity. "I write really straightforward pop songs, and sometimes I feel like I need to try to reinvent the wheel," he said. "Listening to GBV just reaffirms that if you write a great song, it will do the work for you." Aiming for authenticity here, Ralston plans to perform shirtless and straddling a case of Bud. Though the focus will be cuts from the albums Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand, Ralston said the band will cross eras to fit in songs it would be criminal to exclude. Obviously, he's talking about "Glad Girls." 'Cause he only wants to get you high.
