Talk about timing: Former Geraldine Fibbers frontwoman Carla Bozulich finally brings her latest project to town, and she has the luck to play seven blocks away and immediately after the film fest's screening of Steven Sebring's Patti Smith documentary. But Bozulich is no stranger to weird luck. For evidence, check out "Lucky Lucky Luck," from Evangelista's Hello, Voyager! (Constellation). Tara Barnes' unsettling bass sets the scene for Bozulich's tale of a teenager who self-medicates with angel dust and pulls guns on drug dealers — and lives to sing a happy-go-lucky tune about it. Evangelista gets away with a lot of dark deeds, from the orchestral ("For the Li'l Dudes") to the experimental ("Truth Is Dark Like Outer Space"). "Smooth Jazz" — on which Bozulich and Barnes are joined by a screamer, two drummers and two people credited with "hitting stuff" — is more harrowing than anything you'll hear on WJJZ, but their happy ending's earned. Best of all is the title track, a 12-minute improvised incantation that channels Patti Smith's spirit as faithfully as any documentary could.
