Pizza U Empire
Liberties Walk, 1030 N. Second St., 215-925-5051

Open since Saturday, this local mini-franchise offers what just might be the deal of the century (pizza-wise) — a large pie with one topping will set you back just $5.55. How does founder Joseph Aouad manage that? Not sure — but the former Drexel student has more than quadrupled the $100K investment he dropped into his first store near Widener's campus. There are currently six Pizza U locations, including shops near Rowan, West Chester and Delaware; a Temple branch is on the way. Thursday through Saturday, the NoLibs store stays open until 3 a.m., serving sandwiches in addition to bargain pies. Bite This: Pizza U's signature sandwich is the "bakewich," a portable play on the calzone.

>> WAITING LIST

Devil's Den
1148-1150 S. 11th St.

Devil's Den, the massive bilevel gastropub that's coming along nicely in the former Felicia's, should be ready by the first week of February. Scott and Erin Wallace, who own Manayunk's Old Eagle Tavern, are parlaying that spot's cheer 'n' beer feel to South Philly with a beverage program skewed toward the true suds lover — 16 brews on tap downstairs, with another 10 on the second floor, and between 150 and 200 bottles. GM Mick Hally adds that there'll be a strong focus on both German imports and local micros. Head chef Joe Turrisi (Caribou Café, The Union League) is prepping a slew of fair-priced entrées, from jasmine tea pork chops with sweet potato flan to beer-braised pork belly.

Bottom of the Sea
714 South St., 215-627-9510

Popular seafood takeout Bottom of the Sea, which has three West Philly locations in addition to shops in Wilmington and Atlanta, will debut its casual sit-down tomorrow in the space that once housed the notorious Club Kama Sutra. Two floors of the overhauled location will be dedicated to dining, with capacity for about 100; the top floor will carry a sports bar feel. Liquor license is pending; GM Leroy Eady adds that they'll offer both delivery and a late-night bar menu. Bite This: BOTS' Dungeness crab combo features a pound of crab legs, half a pound of steamed shrimp, corn, broccoli and potatoes topped with their patented "Down the Bottom" sauce.

Don't be fooled. The "Large" pie is actually a small 12" pie. The sizes start at large and go up to XXL. The food is horrible and the service is even worse - e.g. twice they showed up without a total for our order and they don't even know how to make most of the food on their menu. We ordered Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteaks and were served (beef) cheesesteaks with buffalo chicken tenders thrown on top. Literally shocking.

The "Pizza U Empire" is a farce! These guys waltz into Northern Liberties and think they can do whatever they want. Double parked BMW 750's and glock-toting managers are the norm. Is this protocol for the next generation pizza shop? Yeah, ok, these bozos have reasonable prices and a catchy name but why can't the boss's ignoramus daughter jot down the total of the order so I don't have to call the manager every time when my food arrives and small talk with a 400lb toolbag that speaks in a dialect similar to a Terry Schiavo. I actually think I saw him on the 19123 Megan's Law list. Their pizza is repeatedly undercooked and they seem to invent a new take on traditional sandwiches each week. Bottom line is, if these goombas are serious business people, they will take heed and stop taking advantage of silly hipsters with a parents credit card. The day real Philadelphians settle for inferior fast food/take-out is the day I'll do the backstroke down the Schuylkill with a Sam Katz mask on shouting "we've won the super bowl".
